(I hadn’t planned this, but today’s Song Sunday falls on Father’s day, and this must have been God’s plan, read more to see why.)
As soon as I heard these lyrics, my heart poured out to God. Sometimes we feel like we can’t do anything. We are weary, and we need His grace and guidance. This is a song for men. This is a song for families. This is a song for the individual.
“Lead Me,” by Sanctus Real
It begins with a man who is a father and a husband. He sees the outside of his life appearing flawless. Lyrics go deeper past the photo frame perfect family and pull toward the inward feelings of his family members. First is his wife.
She wants a husband to lead her. To be there for her when she struggles. To not choose his life over hers. The plea that he shows her that she is loved.
The second verse goes over his kids. He is a hardworking dad, and there is a lack of seeing them. Telling himself, they will be okay. But in the chorus, he is reminded of his kids making some of the same pleas as his wife. To be shown love and protection. For his kids to know that they are loved.
He then pleas to God for God to have His hand on him. Asking God to guide him in the way he should go, and in the way, he needs to guide his family.
Men are to follow His example as a father figure and lifting their wives higher than themselves. Wives are to follow their husbands BECAUSE their husbands SHOULD be placing their wives in front of them.
When couples do not work together, when men become authority figures but are not humbling themselves, then wives are not going to feel heard and loved. There is tension. There is resentment.
But when families work together, there is a balance. There is love. People feel heard and understood. That comes through allowing humility in our lives. Not to focus on being right, but focusing on what Jesus has called us to do.
It’s a beautiful and powerful song. It is family-centered, but there is also a reminder to the individual. We can’t get through life on our own. We need God. We need Him to stand up for us, and God will. We need God to guide us, and He will. For above all else, God is our Father. He is our Shepherd. He is our Teacher.
We will have to give up dreams and pleasures that are not part of God’s plan. Not because He doesn’t love us, but because He does.
God won’t leave us alone.
