What Is My Talent/Gift | Believer 101

(Edited: February 20th, 2021)

When we become a follower of Christ, it is important to realize God will use all parts of our lives for His good. This certainly includes who we are as a person and our natural talents.

As a Christian, we are told in the Great Commission to go to the ends of the earth preaching the gospel. But this also means wherever we go, we should be showing the light of Christ within us.

(NIV) Matthew 5:16, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Each one of us is gifted.

What Are My Gifts?

“Well, how do I know what my gifts are?”

Many of these gifts are natural to us, though some will develop over time. Take a look at scripture for some answers.

(NIV) Romans 12:05-18, “So in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith;if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.”

So the gifts listed in this piece of scripture are:

Prophesying

Serving

Teaching

Giving Encouragement

Giving

Leading

There are others as well, but this is to give you a basic idea.

Many struggle wondering what their spiritual gift or calling is, and dear friends, this is nothing to fret about. The goal is that we serve God and others. We need to proclaim the Gospel truth. We need to show the love of Christ to everyone in our life. Family. Friends. Church body. Strangers. Those we work with.

I enjoy writing, for example, and through my blog, I have been able to instruct and give encouragement. Our job, church, community, and other aspects of our life will allow us to show the love of Christ in various ways to others and the body of Christ. We need to actively go out and do what God has called us to do. Love Him and love others, the two greatest commandments.

The opportunity to serve others in various ways is there. It’s not as complicated as we may think. Go to Him, and seek His will. Serve the Lord today. Serve others today. Show them the love of Christ.

  1. Great post Well said I agree with you and others that we can’t hide our talent waiting for Him. We need to actively go out and do what God has called us to do.

  2. I love this post. I’ve thought about the parable of the talents too before I started into blogging again. We do have a responsibility to use what God has given us. Your obedience to His call has deeply inspired me 🙂

  3. Great post. God has given each of us a gift (talent). Like the parable, we should actively seek out and hone our spiritual gifts.

I liked your quote: “… we can’t hide our talent waiting for Him. We need to actively go out and do what God has called us to do.”

When we become like the last servant and not invest in our talents, God is disappointed because He gave us this talent before we were born and wants us to use it.

  4. Very uplifting post, I agree having a purpose and using our gifts is extremely important. Sometimes the hard part is discovering what our gift may be. I am praying about that so I love that I came across your blog. You are very talented and I look forward to seeing what you post in the future. Very uplifting! By the way my name is Gracia! 🙂

    1. Thank you so much for stopping by! 🙂 I’m so glad you found my post encouraging. It is nice to meet you Gracia! I think by continuing to pray God will guide you. Sometimes God will use what we enjoy to help others. Our gifts can be as simple as showing mercy or giving encouragement. I know in my writing God used my love of counseling to become a gift as well. For me, I didn’t really know what particular gift I had. I just followed what God gave me, and what passions were within me, and what I believe my calling is. It wasn’t until after I was already writing for God, with this blog, that I was beginning to see how He was equipping my gifts. Don’t be disheartened. 🙂 Please feel free to look around, last week I covered an in depth post on prayer. Thank you for visiting!

    1. We definitely have seeds given to us. But when we grow in Christ, we also have Him helping us and what we are given grow. 🙂 So when we look back, and see how far we have come, we know we couldn’t get there alone. God is given glory.

      1. I’m not entirely sure. Mainly because I am not going to self publish, so I first need to have a company accept my work. I’m looking at Tyndale, as they published the Left Behind series. I have a friend with a masters in English, she has offered to be my editor. My hope is if I get accepted, I’ll be able to give her credit as an editor, and hopefully, that would get her name out there.
