Hope | Five Scriptures To Cling To

One of the first times I saw a quote about hope, I was a young teen. I had a calendar picture that said, “Hope is wishing for something to happen, and faith is believing for it to come true.” 

I believe hope in Christ is stronger than simply wishing. But it certainly pushes us forward. I hope these scriptures speak to your heart and give glory to God.

(NIV) Romans 8:24, “For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have?”

– This scripture is powerful. I believe hope is one of the first stepping stones to faith. If we cannot even have hope in the unseen than we will struggle believing and trusting in the unseen. Hope is about what has not happened yet, not what we have already.

(NLT) Romans 4:18, “Even when there was no reason for hope, Abraham kept hoping–believing that he would become the father of many nations. For God had said to him, “That’s how many descendants you will have!”

– It’s really easy for us to feel lost and uncertain when we have no answers, no reassurance that says we should place hope in God. But we are loved by Him. The Alpha and Omega who knows all. People in the Old Testament did not have the hope of Christ, but we do. All the more reason to place hope in Him.

(NLT) Ephesians 4:04, “For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future.”

– When I read this scripture I can’t help but notice how both the body of Christ is referred to as a glorious hope for the future. We are the laborers in the harvest. We must be the light on the hill and the salt on the earth. We must be reflective of Christ, to give others hope. To encourage them to know the King of all kings because we have gotten to know Him.

(NLT) Lamentations 3:20-24, “I will never forget this awful time, as I grieve over my loss. Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this: The faithful love of the LORD never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is His faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh each morning. I say to myself, “The LORD is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in Him!”

– Jeremiah wrote this during a time of Israel’s falling. They were taken captive. That’s why this book is about lamenting, grieving. Yet through all of this pain, he is reminded that the Lord is still God. We see the inspiration for the hymn, “great is thy faithfulness.” Despite our trials and despair, the Lord is beside us bearing our pain. Because of all of this we can still hope in Him!

(NLT) Hebrews 6:18-19, “So God has given both His promise and His oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to Him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary.”

– Hope can lead to us gaining confidence in God. It is strong and trustworthy for our souls! It leads us through the curtain to God’s inner sanctuary. The holy of holies. This is extremely comforting and powerful scripture. God remains the same, which is where our hope comes from and where our hope goes to. He will strengthen us, we have this hope in Him.
