It’s easy for this world to say it’s okay to partake of darkness when it is meant in a fun way.
Christians a lot of time struggle in this, and the temptation only continues to grow.
I was just talking to a friend about this and she mentioned how if we could not do something with Christ being present with us, then we probably should not do it at all. It made me wonder about how many shows, movies, books, and things we do often that Christ would not be okay with.
Horror? It focuses on fear and making people uncomfortable. Fear is not something we are meant to have, and encouraging it in our life seems to go against scripture.
(ESV) 2 Timothy 1:07, “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”
Horror also tends to focus much on themes that go against Jesus as well. Death, violence, gore, demonic and supernatural topics.
Anytime we invite something in our life, even if watered down, it desensitizes us. For example, some believe curse words are okay.
(NLT) Ephesians 4:29, “Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.”
The world accepts darkness. Cursing is wicked because it is not meant to be uplifting. It is not wholesome. There are many things we try to hide behind, even when we know it is not wholesome. But our curiosities are pulled in. Our desire for pleasure (in all senses) are tempted.
Watching a show like Game of Thrones or movie like Fifty Shades of Grey is not wholesome. Would you be comfortable with Jesus sitting beside you watching that? I know there are some supernatural YouTube videos I’ve watched that are not good. Focusing on ghosts, spirits, and hauntings.
Would you be okay if He read out loud what you were reading? I know He wouldn’t be with some of the things I’ve read in the past.
There are videos that because of language and topics of sexual themes they are not wholesome. I’ve worked on giving up a lot to God and He’s helped me. But there are more “watered” down ones that though I felt in the past were more “okay” they really aren’t.
It does not matter how much “less” something partakes in for us to make it seem like it is okay.
A little horror is still horror.
A little nudity is still nudity.
A little cursing is still cursing.
A little wickedness is still wicked.
Evil is evil no matter how big or small.
Something that has really been convicting me, the YouTubers I watch especially if someone takes God’s name in vain is that really acceptable? If I say it is, can I honestly defend my actions to God on Judgement Day? The cursing? The supernatural themes that are not of Him? Sexual talk?
Can I defend these actions to Him?
Don’t feel pressured to defend your actions to me, it’s not about me. Can you defend your choices to Him?
Can we use scripture to defend and support what we are doing?
Who are we choosing more in our life?
Ourselves or Christ?
How Is God Pricking Your Heart?
Monthly Scripture – (NIV) Psalm 139:23-24, “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
