Are You Praying With Specifics

Prayer comes in many forms. That’s the main point of this series to dive into how complex and special it can be. 🙂 But one thing that should be considered is if we are praying for specific things.

I’m not talking about a wish list. I’m not talking about a number of requests.

(NLT) James 4:03, “And even when you ask, you don’t get it because your motives are all wrong–you want only what will give you pleasure.”

It is extremely important we look at what we are experiencing in our life. What we are joyful for and grateful for can lead to us to worship and that can be tied into prayer. But it is very important we are open with God about the harder stuff. This is beyond things we would solely “like” to have.

This is about asking Him for His will and guidance.

I’ve shared before about my toxic church experience. The story ended with after the Lord revealed to me I was struggling with bitterness and I worked on asking for humility, I started to pray for the Lord to provide a church. I was very fragile in my spirit and I did not want to look anymore. So, I asked Him to provide. After a few months, a couple knocked on my door. They moved across the hall and were starting up Bible Studies while they found a building to start their church.

My senior year of high school I didn’t have a close relationship with my friends. My “best friends” were toxic. My spirit was broken. I prayed for a full year that God would provide a friend in college who would not always get mad at me. A friend I could connect with deeply.

The first night of college I talked about an interest of mine to one of the girls in my dorm as we walked to a presentation. This other girl appeared out of nowhere and is like, “You like that?! Me too!” We instantly connected and amazingly as we became better friends it took us three months to realize WE WERE NEXT DOOR NEIGHBORS!

I’ve known her for ten years now. 🙂

God brought to my attention this summer I needed to pray for a friend again and I needed to pray for a peer I could connect to as a sister of Christ. I realized I had not been specific and so I started to pray in His will He would provide and guide me.

He began to put on my heart to reach outside of blogging to other bloggers I was connecting with. There was one blogger in particular I really started connecting with and she had shared with me when we first started talking she had a recent dream that dealt with something she did not usually dream about. If you are familiar with my blog, I sometimes share my dreams. God planned everything.

We connected and then I felt God saying, “You need to suggest Skype and connect on a stronger level.” I later learned He was putting the same thing on her heart. In fact, the day I suggested it she shared, “I was just about to ask!”

She feared because of her shyness maybe it would be awkward. I prayed every day, throughout the day, that God would go against any barriers, any darkness that would sabotage our meeting. When we finally Skyped for the first time we clicked instantly and all barriers were gone. Everyone who knew her was shocked, we talked for six hours!

Now, we chat every day and usually Skype twice a week. One day out of the week is our Bible study.

Scripture tells us to pray for specifics.

(NLT) James 4:02, “You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it.”

Remember the scripture from earlier. This is not about getting what we want but focusing on His will. We can’t have something we don’t bring up to God, but that does not mean He will answer us the way we want.

If we are afraid, ask for courage.

If we are lonely, ask for a friend.

If we struggle with sin, ask He convicts.

An example prayer could be, “Lord. God, I am struggling with _____. I ask that You direct me. I ask for Your will to be done. Please, help me have patience in Your purpose and timing. Help me see Your hand in my life. Lord, guide me in my weakness and remind me that Your purpose for my life is at work. If it is not Your will or timing to do or provide what I would like, help me focus on You and Your ways for my life, instead of my own. Walk me where You want me to be. Amen.”

He knows everything already, but He deserves to be invited in. And He deserves for us to be patient with Him.

Give Him specifics and trust His hand.

  1. A couple of years ago, my pastor gave a sermon on praying specifics. One thing he brought up is that it strengthens your faith to see God answer in specific ways. The challenge to me was if I trusted Him enough to ask for specifics!

Around that same time, my car had been totaled (no one was hurt), and so I decided I would pray for specific things for my new car. I prayed that it would not be ugly (haha), have a nice interior, have 80k miles or less, and be reliable. I prayed that the insurance money from my totaled car would pay for the new one, and that I would be able to work with a dealer who is a Christian. Every. Single. One. Of those things was answered! It made looking for cars a lot easier, because when I found Cheri (my car haha) I KNEW she was the one because she fit everything I was asking the Lord for. She only had about 45k miles, even though she was 13 years old when I got her! The engine and insides were in excellent condition. My roommate and I joked that she must have been owned by an elderly woman that kept her in a garage and only drove her to get to church, haha!

Since then I’ve made praying specifics something I do normally. Thank you for sharing your own testimonies of ways God has specifically answered your specific prayers! It’s always so encouraging and faith-building to hear testimonies of God’s faithfulness in answering prayer! I rejoice hearing how He answered those specific prayers for you!

    1. Praise God. I’m so glad this helped you. Some prayers can be selfish and He may not answer the way we want. But so important we turn to Him with everything and trust His hand. I think that’s how we can give Him the selfish stuff. Our focus and heart is on Him

    1. He is amazing! He definitely can work with vagueness and it is good we give Him everything even when we dont have details. But all the more reason when we do have specifics to turn over. So thankful my answered prayers can encourage others 🙂

  3. I’m still blown away by all of this. God is so good!! 💜 And this is such an encouragement to pray specifically. For years, I had a “God will do what He wants, what is the point of praying?” mentality. But that isn’t true… I was reading about Elijah praying for no rain and God answering in James 5:17 a while back. And also, Moses prayed on behalf of the Israelites when God was ready to wipe out the Israelites and make a new nation from Moses. (Exodus 32:9-14) He does listen to specifics! What a caring God!! 💜
