Stop Coddling Your Sin & Making Excuses

Update: March 17th, 2022 – People will have different convictions. But it is important we examine our media. There were a few sentences that needed edited. More clarity to some sentences has been added. See also: Can People Have Different Convictions? (Recant & Updated Post from 2019)

“Not all people have the same convictions.”

Something that God will want us to give up, He may not have someone else give up. That is the basis of this idea.

The core of it is truthful.

Let’s say someone can play a game in the app store and be done in a few minutes, versus someone who spends hours at a time playing the same game. Self-control is needed so the game may have to be given up. Some convictions are indeed separate. Someone may be convicted to give up having a television in their home. This does not mean everyone has to.

Conviction is needed. But becoming numb to our media won’t help us.

What God may reveal is a sin for one it may not be a sin for another. However, here is where it gets tricky. A lot of people when thinking of these convictions will have a discussion on secular media, television, movies, books, music, etc.

Being exposed to something that has cursing, blasphemy, and nudity in it, simply because someone has not been convicted yet, and they are okay with those choices…is not good enough.

Sin in media affects us and numbs our mind.

We have to be able to defend every single action and choice to the Lord.

(NIV) Ecclesiastes 12:14, “For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.”

(NLT) Romans 14:12, “Yes, each of us will give a personal account to God.”

Just because we may be okay watching a show that is not wholesome does not mean He is okay with it.

(NLT) 1 John 2:15, “Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you.”

Screen Shot 2018-11-15 at 5.28.30 AM.png

Cursing is a sin.

(ESV) Colossians 3:08, “But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.”

Looking at someone who is naked or with exposed skin is a sin. Scripture shares how nakedness must be covered, and how we should not uncover/see the nakedness of others.

(NIV) Genesis 3:07, “Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.”

(NIV) Matthew 5:28, “But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

Taking the Lord’s name in vain is a sin, one I think we are desensitized to in secular media because of how often this occurs out of everyone’s mouth.

Reality tv is often focused on taking sides. Loving certain people and not caring for others. Gossip and drama are huge.

Screen Shot 2018-11-15 at 5.29.03 AM.png

Yet, at the end of the day, it is not wholesome. Though our ears and eyes itch with curiosity and the temptation for more, it is not about being Christlike.

I keep reading about how we are to give up the world. I see the scriptures constantly talk about being focused wholly on Christ. Entertainment, most of the time, is about self and encouraging sinful behaviors and thoughts.

We simply accept media because we love being entertained. We don’t want to believe it has an influence on us. But this is where we fall into temptation. We walk into the snare willingly. Honestly, we are already numb to sinful things and that’s the problem.

(NIV) 1 John 2:16, “For everything in the world–the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life–comes not from the Father but from the world.”

I don’t think all secular media is bad, but 99% of it…yeah. Sin is soaked in it. Sure, people are convicted differently about media, but being desensitized helps no one.

As someone who recently gave up a lot of shows, movies, and YouTubers I used to watch, it is hard to be accountable to all of the things of this world we expose ourselves to. It’s like the more I see, the more I understand what scripture means to be set apart.

(NIV) Colossians 3:05, “Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.”

We are told to have a disconnect from the world. If we truly believe we are a follower of Him, then whatever He would not partake of, we can’t either. It does not matter how small it is. I’m struggling with the truth of this, it is not easy to realize.

But it is the truth.

It is not about knowing what shows, books, movies, trends, or music the world is fascinated by. We must not care about these things.

I don’t want to defend things like Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Fifty Shades Of Grey, Twilight, The Bachelor, etc to God. If it is not focused on Him and His glory, we need to question the material, and examine how desensitized we are to things we are not bothered by.

My Own Struggle With Media

If you want to follow Him, be willing to examine everything in your life in light of what scripture says. When I started looking at media and what I allowed in my life, it started with The Golden Girls. It was humorous, witty, and clever. But there was name-calling, cursing, there was sex outside of marriage, there was God’s name being taken in vain, and so many things against scripture promoting and glorifying ungodliness.

Screen Shot 2018-11-15 at 5.31.11 AM.png

I watched a gamer YouTuber and he was very funny, but he cursed so much and took God’s name in vain and Christ’s name in vain so often. He was not the only one. Many YouTubers did the same thing. They are smart, funny, and very creative with captivating material. But what is wicked gets glorified.

I was enjoying the content. I was entertained. I would watch drama channels on YouTube keeping me up to date on other YouTubers and drama that was going on. More cursing and blasphemy but also gossip. Encouraging me to form opinions about people I don’t know in person. Encouraging judgment on actions that people did, especially the wrong ones.

Is it right for me to say that because I didn’t feel convicted that I am exempt from exposing myself to these sinful things?

(NIV) Mark 7:21, “For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come–sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”

No, I am not exempt.

Screen Shot 2018-11-15 at 5.24.24 AM.png

I’m realizing the things I gave up watching, in particular, my curiosity grows and begs to learn what has happened next. That is the flesh desiring pleasure. It does not matter if a story is well-written. It does not matter if something is creative or eye-catching. Not when it goes in front of God, mocks Him, and His ways.

And I have the nerve to say, “Well, He “didn’t” convict me yet, it’s okay.”

I show depravity and my lack of sensitivity to the Lord. I am in desperate need of prayer and scripture.

Allowing the outside to desensitize me. Putting my fault on the Lord saying IF He is against it He will convict me. Hello, scripture is there for this reason.

You want conviction? Read scripture. (See: Bible Study Tips | The Four R’s Of Bible Studying)

The Lord convicts, however, sin makes us desire to reject Him and HIs convictions! We must take responsibility and be accountable for our actions. If we truly love Him, we will go to Him. Through prayer, supplication, and reading His word. Our eyes can be open to the sin we allow in our life that blinds us.

Questions To Ask:

  • Why do I watch people who curse my Savior, Who bled and died so I could live in eternity?
  • Why do I think it’s okay to look at the nakedness of others simply because it’s a tv show or movie?
  • Why do I think it’s okay to listen to profanity?
  • How do these things prepare me for eternity?
  • Do they point me to Christ or away from Him?
Screen Shot 2018-11-15 at 5.32.04 AM.png

What we allow in our life, does it make us ashamed of Christ? We love our shows. We love our gossip. We love our music. We love our pleasure and our gain.

We either participate with evil or turn away. That is what it means to give up the world. This is what He is teaching me.

(NIV) Luke 13:27, “And He will reply, ‘I tell you, I don’t know you or where you come from. Get away from Me, all you who do evil.'”

Cling To What Is Good, Eternity Depends On It

For what is it worth, everyone, God convicted me, too, while writing this.

Monthly Scripture, (NIV) John 16:33, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

  1. Yes to truth!!! I have a book I started reading last week. It’s on a topic on a part of history I have always wanted to know more about. It isn’t a Christian book. The writer is a very profound international writer. Few pages into the book, she started describing some scenes. Like the good writer that she is, she brings you into the scene with her words. Instantly I felt a conviction not to read it but I ignored it and defended actions by focusing on the main topic the book is addressing. But as more of those scenes appeared, my spirit had no peace to continue reading the book. I felt sad given it up because I was really looking forward to knowing more about that aspect of history. But heaven is worth given that up for. I will ask the Holy Spirit to lead me to clean resources.

      1. It is not easy. And the temptations for watching shows or YouTubers remind me just why I need to give them up. My flesh should not be rebelling against me and constantly begging my mind of curiosity to be filled.

  2. I was thinking about how listening to a song or watching something can be a problem some people and not a problem to others, this morning. I have trouble balancing out obeying the convictions I have and not judging others who may not have those convictions (yet at least). As I was doing my morning bible study, I came across this verse:
“Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.”
Sometimes I look around and see others that God doesn’t seem to have convicted of the same things as he has me. But I think God does not overwhelm us with everything we are doing wrong at once. He shows us the next thing to work on. And since we are all different and on different steps in our journeys God may be trying to show us what others aren’t quite ready to see. And that doesn’t mean we are better than them. It just means we may be different. If we see others doing what we don’t think is entirely God-honoring, for instance the shows they watch, the music they listen to, the first step it to pray. Then maybe confront.

Anyway, just my thoughts right now.

    1. And those are wonderful thoughts 🙂

I wanted to dive deep into the truth of what scripture says. This is not about judging others. But talking about what the scriptures say and how the world easily affects us because scriptures are clear about giving up things of the world. It is not about protesting everyone’s actions but talking about how easily it is for us to be guarded about the things of the world we allow in our lives.

      Deception works in many ways.

I dont want to force anyone to do anything 🙂 but I must be open about how these things affect us. I must tell the truth of scripture. We all have free will. We all make choices. But whether or not the choices we make reflect Christ we are accountable for and scriptire warns us.

      1. I’m sorry if I sounded like I was trying to criticize your post! I was just sort of sharing what was on my heart. Judging others has nothing to do with this post, it’s just something I’ve been struggling with in my heart. It is so important to talk about and be open to talking about what is God honoring how to guard ourselves from the world. When you are fighting sin, it really helps to have someone challenging you and helping you to see where you have compromised. Thank you!

      2. No worries at all!!! I wanted to make sure if the points you brought up were misunderstood I wanted to clarify 🙂 I also have caught myself a lot with judging thoughts and I’m working on casting them out and giving them over to the Lord as soon as I realize what I am thinking. I think what you said is very true. It is important when we discuss sin we dont do it in a judgy way and I think the things God has helped us give up can sometimes make us more harsh with others. Everything needs to be done in love and I think that is what you were sharing overall. 🙂 ❤

    2. The scripture you are referencing is talking about people who were having issues with eating certain foods and they were stuck on the Law. Food in general is not sinful. But the things we expose our body to can be.

      1. I think the verse you are thinking of is in Corinthians. The context for this verse is people saying they will do this or that without submitting their plans to God’s will. The theme of the chapter is submission to God, not the Law and foods and all that. That’s in Corinthians. I might have mixed that up too myself if I hadn’t just read James 4. Thank you!

    3. And you are absolutely right, it is not about being better than others. You’re are so right, too, that we need to be careful we do not judge others. The main reason I shared this is because I think we rely a lot on conviction. But we all are told the same messages in the Bible. What God has shown me with scriptures, not just with my life, is we need to be focused and aware of holiness in all things and what that means to fully give up. Things we are attached to are naturally going to be hard to give up. As I wrote, I don’t think watching, listening, or partaking of the world is supported by scripture regardless of if we have been convicted or not. This post is meant to be a warning. For us to let go of the world and cling closer to Christ. I hope it raises awareness and people talk to Jesus about these things. I also thank you for what you shared and why I left three responses. I really appreciate what you added and I hope my explanations make sense.

  3. ah yes, the difference between cheap grace and costly grace the type that is justification of the sin without justification of the sinner, or the type that costs everything, your life

    1. Praise His name. Giving up stuff can sometimes be hard, I dont think people really understand that especially when it pleases us, and the world encourages it. But it is always worth it.

  5. Awesome post! Everything you have shared is so true. As Christian’s we need to ask ourselves if we would watch or do the things we do if Christ was sitting right next us. I stopped watching reality TV because it wasn’t wholesome. It’s easy to get desensitized to the world around us and the prodding of the Holy Spirit because of all the junk we let in. Thank you for sharing.
