Last time we read about Christ’s birth. Today, we are going to cover a man who looked forward to meeting the Savior, and an old prophetess who preached redemption.
Simeon Meets Baby Christ Before His Death
Luke 2:21-38
Jesus was circumcised after eight days and given the name “Jesus”.
After Mary’s purification days were completed, they traveled to Jerusalem to present Christ to the Lord and to offer a sacrifice (two turtledoves or two young pigeons).
There was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon. He was devout and was waiting for the Consolation of Israel. The Holy Spirit was upon him and it was revealed he would not die till he saw Christ. He entered the temple through the Spirit (v.27) and when he saw the Baby he took Him in his arms and blessed God.
It’s a beautiful blessing and prayer. He thanks God and says he can die in peace after seeing the salvation of God. Joseph and Mary marveled at what was spoken. Simeon blessed them and then he says this to Mary. “Behold, this Child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which will be spoken against (yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. (v.34-25)
Anna Bears Witness
Luke 2:36-38
Anna was a prophetess, from the bloodline of Asher. She was very old. A widow of 84 years. She never left the temple of God. Instead, she served God with fasting and prayers day and night, can you believe it! ❤
She immediately gave thanks to God and of the Christ to all who looked for redemption in Jerusalem.
What To Take Away – There were people filled with the Holy Spirit before Pentecost, which is really interesting! People who studied and awaited the birth of the Savior. A reminder to why we need to study scripture and understand what is to come.
Next time we will read about the meeting of the wise men as well as possible confusion in the timeline.
What do you take away from this story?
Monthly Scripture- (NLT) 2 Corinthians 5:17, “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”

I love the reference in Simeon’s story to a piercing sword. It reminds me of another phrase that I remember from Hebrews that my pastor said is referencing a verse in Isaiah–The Word is like a double-edged sword, splitting joint from marrow, discerning man’s heart. That symbol really alludes to the power of the Lord and the good news. ♥
