The Lie Social Media Gives That Christian Bloggers Continue To Spread

Note: I am not saying every single Christian blogger writes this way. I wanted to discuss the topic because of how our world is.

We’re not honest enough most of the time.

You see it in social media. The perfect Instagram. The perfect and ideal life someone shares on Facebook. Exciting accomplishments shared on Twitter.

It has carried over into Christian blogs.

How many of you have heard, “I only want to spread positivity and encouragement.”

Nothing wrong with positivity and encouragement. I think it is important to be guarded about what we share.

But it becomes a problem when we isolate the truth around our lives to the point people only see one side of us, and often times, a side that is VERY misleading.

There’s a mysterious cloak people often like to pull over their posts and what they share with others.

Do we hide our trials and the fact we may not ALWAYS trust in God? That we, in fact, experience doubt. That we are not the Christian we may appear to be in our posts.

The truth is when people see “perfect Christians” write, it becomes intimidating and a false message. Confusing for those who do not know the truth of the Gospel, and/or are weak in their own walk with Christ.

My concern is that Christian bloggers can easily paint false pictures when everything written in a blog focuses on “the good stuff of what being a Christian means.” Example #blessed. It is important we speak the truth, and seeing our blessings in all situations is something we need to aim for. But the reality is that it is not realistic for most people. We could make our readers question themselves because we sound like we are “happy” and “always the perfect Christian”.

Sharing our trials leads to sharing testimonies and seeing the hand of God. I’m not saying we should be negative in talking about these things or complaining about them. Rather, to show others that despite our pain God is still good. Surrendering our flesh to the cross and growing in Christ through tribulation is a good thing. It humbles us. He gives us strength. Glory is His.

Topics that dive beyond the surface of “blessing talk” and show what real faith is. Times we have walked through the valley of the shadow of death and we have felt the Shepherd near.

A reminder we need sometimes more than our own readers.

People wonder why readers or viewers appear shocked when an influencer shares that they did not have a good day or struggled with their faith on a blog post. To the readers…it came out of nowhere.

But we need to ask ourselves, did we leave our readers with an honest view on our walk with Christ? Or did we mislead them?

I see many Christian bloggers desire to help and put a focus on everyone else’s walk with Christ, and how everyone else can grow in Christ…except the blogger.

This is why we need honesty. It keeps us accountable.

Are we deceptive in what we write because we want numbers? We want to be liked? Sharing the truth is not always easy to write, nor is it easy for others to hear

Are we tempting others or possibly being a stumbling block if we talk about items all the time? Are we secretly tempting people with the love of money? As a Christian blogger, we need to be aware of everything we promote, why we are promoting something, and why, in general, are we discussing a topic?

Are we tempting people with comparisons and jealousy? Again, I’m not saying we can’t talk about our lives, but why are we talking about certain things? What is the core reason why we want to share something?

Are we competing with others? Valentines recently happened. Do we share what we received because “everyone” else shared? We want to show off? We care what others think if we do not share?

I want us to think critically about why we write and post on our blog.

How do our posts glorify God? How do our posts help people? How do our posts possibly trip up people? Why do we write, honestly?

To mimic a fantasy that is not true for our readers, or to tell the truth because we are not perfect and we want to show why Christ is. We want to share what His grace exactly means for us.

We want honesty so others are not deceived.

A blog dealing with light topics may make a lot of traffic. It may be ideal and a “safe” way to blog. But those who are followers of Christ know the truth…and we have to be honest.

  1. I came across you on Tom’s blog (excatholic4christ). You give such a lot of helpful advice on Christian blogging. Having read some of your pages, I can see I’ve been making lots of mistakes, so I’m glad I can come here for guidance. Thank you!

    1. Thanks so much, Lesley! Yes, I’m actually updating my 2018 post on things not to do when visiting blogs. Thanks for liking the posts!!! Tom has great work and I’m glad his writing is a blessing to us both.

  2. I’ve just come across this, and I just wanted to thank you for also being someone else that cares about sharing the truth over this idea of perfection that a lot of Christian content seems to produce. I try my best to be as real as I can with my posts, and it’s encouraging to see someone doing the same. God bless!

    1. There is a huge temptation to tiptoe around Christ and His truth. Sanctification and holiness are scary words to a lot of people. Love of stats hold many back. I struggled with that last year and so grateful on how God led me and how He continues to guide me. People need to be open and stop trying to please the world. It’s about Him and getting closer to Him. Truth is needed and weakness is needed. Thanks for being real and spreading the truth!

  3. I am a little late to this but I helped at a church event for teen girls and this was the main topic chosen by the girls. They talked about body insecurity & life insecurity because of the media and most of all other christians & friends posting perfect family pictures. These girls were beautiful in their own right but social media tells them they do not measure up. It was alarming at how little advice the adults had to give because they also struggled with this very problem. Great post!

    1. It’s so true!!! We live in a time where comparison is a constant temption. It’s so sad at the lack of advice adults could give.

You may have inspired to write further on this topic. 🙂

  4. Great points here, T. R.! I’ve been out of the loop for a while (working on a deadlined project) but had a second to read your post… Good stuff. We definitely heed to be open, honest, and vulnerable – and accountable to each other. I am super-fortunate to have some ladies who pray with me and aren’t afraid to say hard thing. We share each other’s struggles and triumphs and keep one another accountable. And you can only fake it so far in a face-to-face meeting early in the morning! Haha!

  5. Honesty and transparency are so important, but hard to find. Too many people wearing masks. Too much deception and fakery. Sometimes, honestly, I wonder, “Does anybody tell the truth anymore?” “Is anyone really who they say they are?” “Are they just being ‘nice’ or do they really mean it?” I see so much of this it just breaks my heart. We need to drop the masks and be real, but a lot of people don’t like real. It makes them uncomfortable. But, Jesus was real, and he is our model.

    1. Amen, He was and is and will always be real 🙂 He slipped away daily to pray. You’re right so many things we can take from Christ. People are scared to be real. I hope by being honest we can encourage others to do the same. 🙂

      1. Actually, the Lord had me write on this subject today, too. He was showing me much yesterday, but yesterday it wasn’t all coming together. Today it came together. Yes, we need to be real! Amen!

  6. I believe we need to share our joys and our trials with each other. With sharing, we may be helping someone else. I ask God to give me the words to share, words that will draw others closer to Him. 🙂

  7. Yes! Thank you for always being transparent! I’m definitely working on being more open and honest about life and struggles. I definitely don’t want to come across perfect, since I am no where near it! Thank you for this great reminder!

  8. Yes! I’m so glad you decided to write up a blog post about this. I recall you writing on your FB page about something similar to this. This definitely needs to be heard.

  9. You are right. I have even been rebuked for sharing something that as you say was not positive and they added that is old testament. The truth is not always pleasant, I have a friend who will come to me and tell me ‘make me cry, you are the only one who will tell me the truth’, meaning that I will still speak truth even if it hurts. Thanks for this post, great job.

    1. This post is sooo true. It literally reminds me of a blog I wrote at the start of this year titled “truth be told” https://femellesoul.com/2019/01/05/truth-be-told/

I’d got to a place in my blogging where I felt like I was sitting on the fence. Too cautious to tell the truth. Too ashamed to do so. Too fearful. Even though all these emotions were soo minuscule, God really showed me that there is no point in writing a Christian blog without vulnerability and truth. This post just even bought that to my remembrance. Thank you!!

      1. I’m so glad this spoke to you and encouraged you! God is amazing and there is nothing He cannot do! Sometimes we have to be reminded why we write. I’m glad He brought you through these waters.
