The Lie Social Media Gives That Christian Bloggers Continue To Spread

Note: I am not saying every single Christian blogger writes this way. I wanted to discuss the topic because of how our world is.

We’re not honest enough most of the time.

You see it in social media. The perfect Instagram. The perfect and ideal life someone shares on Facebook. Exciting accomplishments shared on Twitter.

It has carried over into Christian blogs.

How many of you have heard, “I only want to spread positivity and encouragement.” 

Nothing wrong with positivity and encouragement. I think it is important to be guarded about what we share.

But it becomes a problem when we isolate the truth around our lives to the point people only see one side of us, and often times, a side that is VERY misleading.

There’s a mysterious cloak people often like to pull over their posts and what they share with others.

Do we hide our trials and the fact we may not ALWAYS trust in God? That we, in fact, experience doubt. That we are not the Christian we may appear to be in our posts. 

The truth is when people see “perfect Christians” write, it becomes intimidating and a false message. Confusing for those who do not know the truth of the Gospel, and/or are weak in their own walk with Christ.

My concern is that Christian bloggers can easily paint false pictures when everything written in a blog focuses on “the good stuff of what being a Christian means.” Example #blessed. It is important we speak the truth, and seeing our blessings in all situations is something we need to aim for. But the reality is that it is not realistic for most people. We could make our readers question themselves because we sound like we are “happy” and “always the perfect Christian”. 

Sharing our trials leads to sharing testimonies and seeing the hand of God. I’m not saying we should be negative in talking about these things or complaining about them. Rather, to show others that despite our pain God is still good. Surrendering our flesh to the cross and growing in Christ through tribulation is a good thing. It humbles us. He gives us strength. Glory is His.  

Topics that dive beyond the surface of “blessing talk” and show what real faith is. Times we have walked through the valley of the shadow of death and we have felt the Shepherd near.

A reminder we need sometimes more than our own readers. 

People wonder why readers or viewers appear shocked when an influencer shares that they did not have a good day or struggled with their faith on a blog post. To the readers…it came out of nowhere.

But we need to ask ourselves, did we leave our readers with an honest view on our walk with Christ? Or did we mislead them?

I see many Christian bloggers desire to help and put a focus on everyone else’s walk with Christ, and how everyone else can grow in Christ…except the blogger.

This is why we need honesty. It keeps us accountable.

Are we deceptive in what we write because we want numbers? We want to be liked? Sharing the truth is not always easy to write, nor is it easy for others to hear. 

Are we tempting others or possibly being a stumbling block if we talk about items all the time? Are we secretly tempting people with the love of money? As a Christian blogger, we need to be aware of everything we promote, why we are promoting something, and why, in general, are we discussing a topic?

Are we tempting people with comparisons and jealousy? Again, I’m not saying we can’t talk about our lives, but why are we talking about certain things? What is the core reason why we want to share something?

Are we competing with others? Valentines recently happened. Do we share what we received because “everyone” else shared? We want to show off? We care what others think if we do not share?

I want us to think critically about why we write and post on our blog.

How do our posts glorify God? How do our posts help people? How do our posts possibly trip up people? Why do we write, honestly?

To mimic a fantasy that is not true for our readers, or to tell the truth because we are not perfect and we want to show why Christ is. We want to share what His grace exactly means for us.

We want honesty so others are not deceived.

A blog dealing with light topics may make a lot of traffic. It may be ideal and a “safe” way to blog. But those who are followers of Christ know the truth…and we have to be honest.
