It Doesn’t Matter If Christian Music “Sounds The Same”

It is not about the sound being the same, but the message and the people who represent it.

In any genre of music, there are going to be groups of bands and singers that have the same sound, let’s be real. Christian music is no exception. But I find it ironic how people try to drag Christian music.

I saw a video recently that admittedly frustrated me. This individual ranted about how “all Christian music sounds the same”. It is a bandwagon statement so many people say. Truth, I have too! 😉

But this was before I did my research.

When I was a teen up to my early 20s, I still had a select group of bands and singers that were Christian I liked listening to. This, of course, was before I was introduced to KLove and Air1, and if you want more Christian radio stations (to listen for free online, no account) I wrote a huge list this past weekend.

I’m excited about music if you can’t tell. I think music is a powerful way to be pulled into time with the Lord. Through worship of singing, through prayer, through ranting with God in the car while the music plays 😉 It is a way to draw others to Christ, and I think it’s important we are aware so when others down Christian music, they could possibly be surprised by the glory God is receiving. I know I’ve surprised a number of people with the variety in Christian music.  

To be frank, I’m tired of people not taking the time to expand their horizons. If people are only letting one to three radio stations determine what a “Christian” sound is…no. 

But…I did it too. 

And I was wrong.

For example, if we tried to compare Hilary’s Scott’s Thy Will Be Done to Skillet’s The Resistance or the song currently playing in my background by King & Country God Only Knows. Not one song sounds the same.

Mic drop. 

I think the Christian stereotype sound is a soft, (possibly piano), choir-like, or a peppy upbeat sound (like that’s bad?) We need to get out of the shadow of our grey clouds raining down on us. Music SHOULD be uplifting.

But hey, you want some sober tones? I got you covered!

But this post isn’t meant to only disapprove this stereotype. Instead, I want to talk about the things Christian music is, but other music isn’t.

Christian music should have somewhat of the same sound BECAUSE WE SHOULD BE UNIFIED! So no cursing, inappropriate lyrics of sexualizing everything, or revenge. Instead, holding up morals and values, showing Christ, explaining why we should care, why the world is wicked, family, praise to God above all else…yeah, Christian music needs that.

In fact, ANY FORM OF CHRISITAN WHATEVER NEEDS THIS!

WARNING: Ahem, I’m going to go on my little soapbox right now…

Christian music needs Christian artists to go boldly with the truth of Christ against this world. To fully understand and show what it means to be a follower of Christ in all ways, especially when the world is tempting. Christian music, its artists NEED to stand out and be set apart as we are called to do! 

All Christians lead by example. We are ALL accountable to this.

We can’t be lukewarm in the truth. We can’t have part of Christ and mingle His truth with the wickedness of the world to be more accepted or because that makes us more comfortable, no!

I’m torn and hurt I see people back away from the Christian title. Singers, authors, game designers, bloggers, people I know in my life…

Either because of their own walk falling away or the pressure of the world encouraging them to be more of the world. I want people to be turned back to Christ, not continue walking away from Him.

I hope those who do not embrace the Christian title outwardly but create Christian material… are encouraged to embrace this title. I want people to embrace the name of Christ. I want them to embrace saying outwardly, “I am a follower of Christ and what I put out in this world is for Him and to draw others to Him.” 

People need prayer! We need to pray against the power of this evil world! We need to pray for the eyes of others to be opened. That the conviction is so strong and heavy in people’s hearts they have to make a direct choice.

Because being lukewarm is already choosing death. I do not want the deception of people being lukewarm to pull others down.

Yes, Christian music should have a unified sound. It should be a reminder of what is good in this world, and Whose hands these things came from. But no, the truth should not only be spoken from one voice. The truth should be coming out of the mouths of many. 

We need to be part of that many, in everything we do.

To be Christlike is what matters.

To be Christlike and giving Him the glory in all we do.

To me, Christian music is a reminder, and for that, I’m grateful.
