It is not about the sound being the same, but the message and the people who represent it.
In any genre of music, there are going to be groups of bands and singers that have the same sound, let’s be real. Christian music is no exception. But I find it ironic how people try to drag Christian music.
I saw a video recently that admittedly frustrated me. This individual ranted about how “all Christian music sounds the same”. It is a bandwagon statement so many people say. Truth, I have too! 😉
But this was before I did my research.
When I was a teen up to my early 20s, I still had a select group of bands and singers that were Christian I liked listening to. This, of course, was before I was introduced to KLove and Air1, and if you want more Christian radio stations (to listen for free online, no account) I wrote a huge list this past weekend.
Post | Christian Radio Stations You Can Listen To Online
I’m excited about music if you can’t tell. I think music is a powerful way to be pulled into time with the Lord. Through worship of singing, through prayer, through ranting with God in the car while the music plays 😉 It is a way to draw others to Christ, and I think it’s important we are aware so when others down Christian music, they could possibly be surprised by the glory God is receiving. I know I’ve surprised a number of people with the variety in Christian music.
To be frank, I’m tired of people not taking the time to expand their horizons. If people are only letting one to three radio stations determine what a “Christian” sound is…no.
But…I did it too.
And I was wrong.
For example, if we tried to compare Hilary’s Scott’s Thy Will Be Done to Skillet’s The Resistance or the song currently playing in my background by King & Country God Only Knows. Not one song sounds the same.
Mic drop.
I think the Christian stereotype sound is a soft, (possibly piano), choir-like, or a peppy upbeat sound (like that’s bad?) We need to get out of the shadow of our grey clouds raining down on us. Music SHOULD be uplifting.
But hey, you want some sober tones? I got you covered!
Seventh Day Slumber – One Mistake, a song about fearing we are one mistake away from falling from God. Christian Alternative Rock.
Or the fear of choosing darkness because it keeps whispering – Disciple – Come My Way, Christian Rock.
We As Human– We Fall Apart– The truth that we think we are invincible and the irony is we easily fall apart. Christian Rock/Alternative Rock.
You want a beat, but one that is not peppy?
TobyMac- Till The Day I Die – Not giving up on the calling God has placed within us and to keep going forward. Christian Hip Hop.
And so much more, the playlist I’ve created on YouTube has over 700 songs now. All different sounds. Some that are stereotypical, sure, and others, that are not. Check out the list
But this post isn’t meant to only disapprove this stereotype. Instead, I want to talk about the things Christian music is, but other music isn’t.
Christian music should have somewhat of the same sound BECAUSE WE SHOULD BE UNIFIED! So no cursing, inappropriate lyrics of sexualizing everything, or revenge. Instead, holding up morals and values, showing Christ, explaining why we should care, why the world is wicked, family, praise to God above all else…yeah, Christian music needs that.
In fact, ANY FORM OF CHRISITAN WHATEVER NEEDS THIS!
WARNING: Ahem, I’m going to go on my little soapbox right now…
Christian music needs Christian artists to go boldly with the truth of Christ against this world. To fully understand and show what it means to be a follower of Christ in all ways, especially when the world is tempting. Christian music, its artists NEED to stand out and be set apart as we are called to do!
All Christians lead by example. We are ALL accountable to this.
We can’t be lukewarm in the truth. We can’t have part of Christ and mingle His truth with the wickedness of the world to be more accepted or because that makes us more comfortable, no!
I’m torn and hurt I see people back away from the Christian title. Singers, authors, game designers, bloggers, people I know in my life…
Either because of their own walk falling away or the pressure of the world encouraging them to be more of the world. I want people to be turned back to Christ, not continue walking away from Him.
I hope those who do not embrace the Christian title outwardly but create Christian material… are encouraged to embrace this title. I want people to embrace the name of Christ. I want them to embrace saying outwardly, “I am a follower of Christ and what I put out in this world is for Him and to draw others to Him.”
People need prayer! We need to pray against the power of this evil world! We need to pray for the eyes of others to be opened. That the conviction is so strong and heavy in people’s hearts they have to make a direct choice.
Because being lukewarm is already choosing death. I do not want the deception of people being lukewarm to pull others down.
Steps down from soapbox.
Yes, Christian music should have a unified sound. It should be a reminder of what is good in this world, and Whose hands these things came from. But no, the truth should not only be spoken from one voice. The truth should be coming out of the mouths of many.
We need to be part of that many, in everything we do.
To be Christlike is what matters.
To be Christlike and giving Him the glory in all we do.
To me, Christian music is a reminder, and for that, I’m grateful.
Comment Below:
Do you think Christian music sounds the same? What kind of music are you into?
Monthly Scripture – (NLT) 1 Timothy 1:19, “Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear. For some people have deliberately violated their conscience and as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked.”

I have to admit that the sameness of a lot of Christian music is tiring at times, but I completely agree that there should be a unified theme. My music breaks most of the KLove rules, but I hope at least that there is a reverance and theme that Christians can recognize.

Yes. I definitely have Christian songs and bands I’ve found, especially Christian rock and alternative that tend to not be on KLove. Which is why I encourage people to search out music 🙂

I really just can’t agree that ‘CHRISTIAN’ music is any better. The statistics are still the same.

I forgot all about Seventh Day Slumber, that’s a blast from my past. Disciple is a very good hard rock band with Christian messages. I love metal and those labeled “Christian” offered me the sound I wanted with a Godly message. Content is the key. Some bands that are not Christian have more thoughtful lyrics than those deemed “good Christian bands.”
We also have to remember theology matters and Christian bands can accidentally screw that up.

That’s very true.
Glad you could revisit your past. 🙂 I’ve found a lot of Seventh Day Slumber songs to be really impactful.

I’ll have to dig in my iTunes and find them for the morning commute.

I used to think a lot of Christian music sounded the same until I initiated the discovery of different artists on Spotify and YouTube. I understand the criticism, but if we really think about it, doesn’t a lot of top 40 music sound the same?? I like to listen to a mix of secular-sounding Christian music (pop, rap, R & B, rock), worship music (aka the ones that “all sound the same”), bluegrass hymns, predominantly black gospel, and more. 🙂 I’m with you also on wishing people would just have the guts to call themselves Christian and not sit on the fence.

Oh, I do not disagree that the “top hits do not have a similar sound” and I think that’s also because of what the majority is comfortable listening to. And hey if God can be praised through it, if it draws people to Him, that’s what matters most to me. 🙂 But I am thankful for variety.
It is not easy to take the title. And I can understand there may contracts…etc. But the thing is, as I’ve had this talk with someone close who brought up these good points (for perspective) as a follower of Christ we are making a claim. And to deny any part of our walk to appease the world is a huge problem.

Honestly, I think all music whether it is Christian or secular sounds the same at some point. Especially, within a certain genre like RnB is all the same theme..sex, make up, break up , falling in love, etc.
Christian music is no different, but at least if I’m listening to Christian music I won’t be tempted to sin. At least I hope your Christian music isn’t tempting you to sin.
But we listen to Christian rap, gospel, rock, contemporary etc.
You know what really bothers me…is that there is a Christian music section and a Gospel music section. Like gospel is not Christian music lol, but that’s just my pet peeve.

Exactly 🙂 I don’t know why people say Christian music sounds the same but not any other genre. There are songs that will sound alike. That was why I brought this up in the beginning of the post. And I don’t care as much about the sound, as I do the message.
If something is considered “Christian” but is tempting people through lyrics we need to stay far away from it.
Yes, I’ve noticed the separation of Christian and Gospel music too. It is odd.

Couldn’t agree more. Whether the sound the same or not, at least they are glorifying the name of God (I hope). Funny enough I have never heard of any of the names you mentioned. I love gospel music and no I am not separating the two. I have always called Christian music gospel music as they should be the same. I love Hillsong, Bethel, Maranda Curtis, Nathaniel Bassey and many others.

Amen! Exactly! Glory goes to Him 🙂 I view Christian music the same. 🙂 Gospel music is Christian music. And definitely there are some songs and artists though claiming the Christian title are not Christian.
I have a few of HIllsong I like. I’ve learned some things about the background of HIllsong and Bethel music (the company has a lot of singers under them) that shocked me sadly. But regardless of that, I’m grateful for songs that give praise to God 🙂 ❤ I'll have to look up some of the names you mentioned 🙂

I have read something about Hillsong. Not sure if we are referring to the same thing. But personally I take what I need to take from everything because sadly the more I search into the lives of these Christian musicians, the more I get disappointed.

Not sure either, what I was looking into had to do with some docrtine practices (especially with Bethel). But I agree, people are not perfect. I think it’s a reminder I have to hold close to my heart, and all the more reason to pray for people especially those who are looked upon as a leader and great example to many. To pray that where people fall short, Christ does not, and for them to grow in Him and share an incredible testimony ❤

That being said, I can’t say it’s wrong either to research the people we “admire” or “look up to”. I think we are accountable to what we promote to others, and those we listen to as well. 🙂

I agree. But i personally wouldn’t say I admire or look up to them. With music, I focus more on the lyrics than the person. But on other cases, I agree

Amen, that’s what I said “admire” or “look up” because I don’t do the same either 🙂 I think maybe using the word “influence” may be better. Whoever, or whatever we allow in our lives could leave a possible influence.

Yes, I’ve had to create a curated list of Christian music that has substance (thank goodness for Spotify). Some songs are fairly fluffy and empty – could be love songs rather than songs about Jesus, for example.
