Psalm | Help In Trouble

I thought the Bible Summary might be more interesting if four books are covered in the month. So each week will be a different book. The Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke & John), 2 Samuel, Psalm, and Proverbs.

Introduction To Psalm: It is called “Psalm” but it contains many songs inside. The book of Psalms contains the largest amount of chapters in the Bible. Consisting of 150 chapters it also covers the most diverse of topics. From Creation to the Messiah, to death, war, help, anxiety, fear, sleep deprivation, and more. David is the known author for many songs, but there are some other authors as well, including Solomon.

Interestingly, sometimes you will see the word, “Selah,” and this is meant to take a moment and pause and reflect, something I think we need to do more often with scripture.

Today’s Reading |  Chapters 1 -3

Way Of The Righteous

Those who are in the counsel of the Lord, and not in the counsel of sinners, are blessed. Those who are focused on studying the scriptures daily. Day and night (v. 2 of ch.1).

In this counsel, we are rooted like a tree, and we will produce fruit in the right time. We will not dry out in hard times.

But those who do not follow the Lord and seek His truth daily are like chaff (think wheat) which blows away in the wind. There is no foundation to rely on.

God knows the way of the righteous, but the ungodly will perish.

Messiah’s Triumph & Kingdom

It speaks of those who plotted against Christ, who tried to go against God.

Yet, the Lord laughs at them. They will be distressed from His wrath and His displeasure. Jesus will be given the nations as His inheritance. The ends of the earth for His possession.

Authorities are warned to be wise and instructed. To serve the Lord with fear and to rejoice with trembling. To show favor and care to Christ lest we experience the wrath of God and perish. (v. 10-12 ch.2)

Those who put their trust in Him are blessed.

The Lord Helps His Troubled People

So, we actually covered this story. David wrote this psalm when he fled from his son Absalom, if you would like to be familiar with the story, please see…

Post | Treason & David’s Escape

David speaks how people have increased against him and how they claim he has no help in the Lord. He is reminded that the Lord is His shield. That God is his glory and God lifts up his head. He cries out and is heard.

V. 6 of Ch. 3 is really powerful, “I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people who have set themselves against me all around”

He asks for the Lord to help him. Again, we are told, the Lord’s blessing is on the Lord’s people.

What To Take Away: There is power in the name of Jesus. There is power in the hand of God. If we are not seeking Him, we will fall away. We will not have strength that can overcome anything, because our strength is futile. But those who turn to the Lord, who meditate on His word daily, who seek after the footsteps of Christ, those people will be rooted in His truth. They will be protected under Him.

David is a powerful example of this. Even when so many turned against him, he sought the Lord and the Lord’s will. God did answer David’s prayer.

And as we are warned in scripture, those who are ungodly, who turn away, who do not follow Christ, there is a penalty to pay. Those who went against David, which meant going against the Lord, had consequences.

  1. I try so hard to put my faith in Him at all times although my anxiety can sometimes make me feel like I am subconcsiously struggling. Thank you for the reminder!
Also I love Psalms and Proverbs! When I went to AWANA, a Christian group, I used to enjoy those the most!
I just looked up Psalms for a refresher and one of the quotes that I enjoy is, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.” – Psalm 46:1-3
    Blessings!
