In addition to adding Psalms, I will also be starting Proverbs as well, which I’m excited to start going over.
INTRO – Proverbs is known as the “book of wisdom” written by Solomon. Proverbs covers everything relating to life. It is often written in a poetic form but it is also full of stories, parables, and more.
Today’s Reading: Chapter 1
Fear Of The Lord Is The Beginning Of Knowledge
Common sense is not so common.
Those who are wise will listen. Through listening, understanding is increased (1:05). The fear of the Lord is the beginning to knowledge.
Listening To Parents & Resist Temptation
Listening to our parents’ instructions are like graceful ornaments (1:09). That’s pretty powerful. Clarification: This scripture is referring to guardians/parents those who truly are looking out for their child. This does not mean all adults who have children…are parents. I know some people who did not grow up with parents. Not all adults look out for their kids, this scripture is referring to those parents who are. Through scripture, we see which instructions parents need to give kids. Even if you do not have a parent, God is your Father, and His instructions are all found in scripture ❤
The father warns the son against following the footsteps of sinners, and those encouraging sinful behavior. In particular, the sinners mentioned are murderers and thieves. The father mentions that those who are greedy lose life because greediness is also a thief. (1:19).
Not Listening To Rebuke & Being Denied Counsel
The remainder of Ch. 1 is pretty intense. It warns that wisdom/understanding is not hidden. It’s basically being called out in a courtyard for all. But not everyone will want to listen. People want to remain doing what they desire to do.
However, because of this refusal, when problems hit, when terror comes, destruction, distress, and anguish, when they cry out, they will not be answered. In this distress, they seek diligently for counsel, but they will not get it because they hated the knowledge and rebuke in the first place. They refused to listen when they should have. But now that they want help it is too late.
1:31-33 “Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way, and be filled to the full with their own fancies. For the turning away of the simple will slay them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; but whoever listens to me will dwell safely, and will be secure without fear of evil.”
What To Take Away: Chapter one of Proverbs is pretty powerful. It is almost like an introduction to being a follower of Christ. Jesus gives us the way to life and to the Father, but it is only THROUGH HIM! We must be willing to follow His footsteps.
Surrender to Him daily. Revoke the flesh. Stop making excuses for allowing sin in our life. Stop making excuses for choosing things that make us “happy” or “entertain” us, but do not, in fact, glorify God.
In the same way wisdom is proclaiming itself in the courtyard, Jesus has already given us all the truth we need to know in scripture. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of understanding, and it begins in His truth. We know the Lord through His Word. He knows us through our daily walk with Him and surrendering our flesh and this world to Him. (Intimate Meaning In, “I Do Not Know You.”)
If we do not heed Christ, His word, His instruction, we will lose Him. We will lose His counsel and help. Scripture multiple times warns against believing in vain. (Hebrews 6:06, 1 Timothy 6:20-21, and 1 Corinthians 15:02) Those who believe but serve themselves, and yet cry out, “Lord, Lord.” The fiery gates of Hell are too late to cry out. The realization of the truth of His proclamation is too late in Hell.
The sinner, even a fallen/sinning believer (who is not repenting and drawing close to God) does not have forever to turn from their ways.

Monthly Scripture – (NKJ) Isaiah 54:17, “No weapon formed against you shall prosper and every tongue which rises against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is from Me,” says the Lord.
