The Staircase – Christian Flash Fiction

(Disclaimer: If you struggle with images of Hell or slight discussion of demons, I’ll see you for another post 🙂 do not read this. )

Darkness.

Heavy darkness filled with dread and pain.

Suffocating. Tangible. Bitter to taste. Deathly, yet, will not kill.

Screams.

Echoes against hollow concrete walls. Scratch marks covering the surface, till fingers were bone.

Heat scorching and killing until the last breath.

It was the last breath everyone lived on, and they dreaded it.

Here everyone was the same. Living dead skeletons. The first flesh long burned away, yet the pain always remained as fresh. New skin enclosed bones only to fall off again. Screeches of anger, regret, and longing reek every cell and pit.

The tormentors taunt, “You had every choice to walk away, while we dug your grave. So consumed in your flesh, you couldn’t feel our nails puncturing your ankles, pulling you in. Your ecstasy of self. Love of lust, popularity, and lies. You chose this! You chose us!” They scoff, shaking their heads, “You thought no one knew your dark thoughts.”

Horrific laughter makes the screams cower. “YOU THOUGHT YOU WOULD ESCAPE!”

Fiery coals rain down. Voices parched with thirst. So hoarse everyone desires to stop screaming out of pain, yet, they can’t.

Flashes of lightning give the living dead their reminder of their choice. A staircase covered in vines. The only life in the area that would ever remain until the destruction was complete. The last hope they had and walked away from.

Literally.

The demons hush their laughter as they see a figure begin to walk down. A woman. It was clear her life was a hard one. Yet, she hesitates with each step. A few times, she even looks back.

Ten steps remain.

Then five.

One.

She couldn’t feel the heat on her, as her foot had not touched the ground. She didn’t see the demons surrounding her, nor feel their breath. But then, once more, she turned around. This time, she kept her gaze focused on the top of the stairs. Someone was talking to her.

“I built that staircase for you to stay with Me. Not for you to go down. I built that staircase for each step is a warning. Unfortunately, most who are consumed with self, never hear or see the warnings.”

Suddenly, it was as if scales fell from her. Absolute terror filled her face. She felt the breath of demons and saw their blood-red eyes. Falling on her face, she crawled up the stairs. But with the fire of Hell below her, she stopped twenty steps away.

Ashamed.

Reality hit her. SHE chose darkness. SHE decided to walk away.  A greater fear filled her so much that she could no longer move. Her eyes downcasted. Everything was made clear to her when the scales fell. Her Savior. Her sin. But it was too much to bear.

A man approached her at the top of the staircase. “Daughter, why can you no longer walk forward?”

“I can’t bear this,” her lips moved, but her voice shook. Tears drenched her cheeks.

He walked to her level. “That’s why I did,” He smiled.

“There’s a reason why there are vines lingering on the last step. I AM the true Vine, and I have gone ahead of your sin, to save you from the penalty of it. Alone, you have the power and strength to walk to Hell, but you can never go back. With Me, in your weakness, I have the strength to carry you to the top.”

His gentleness warmed her. His truth filled her. “I will follow You.” Immediately something fell away from her, but she didn’t realize.

He picked her up effortlessly, and she felt like a small child. A love overwhelmed her as she felt it anointing her head, arms, all the way down to her feet. Placing her on soft grass, she noticed something was left behind.

A pair of shoes remained on the top stair.

“What are those for,” she asked with a child-like curiousness. No more fear. No more pain. Complete trust in this man. Warm air blew around her. Birds sang above her. Flowers danced along with the breeze.

“Those shoes remain,” He nodded. “They are for the path of death. They are the life you leave behind. Either here…or in Hell.” He smiled, “But daughter, you need not worry. On holy ground, ” He held her hand, “you don’t need shoes.”

Dear Reader, There are those who DO pick up their shoes.

(NIV) Psalm 18:02, “The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”

(NIV) Matthew 10:28, “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”

(NIV) John 15:01-02, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit He prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in Me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me.”
