Struggle Of Being A Nitpicker

I wouldn’t say I’m nitpicky.

NitpickyLooking for small, or unimportant faults, especially to criticize someone.

Yeah, that’s not me!

Until I read today’s devotional which touched on a wise warning from Jesus.

(NIV) Matthew 7:03, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?”

A plank, a wooden board, is very visible. It’s obvious. But a speck? A speck could easily go unnoticed unless we are specifically looking for it.

Ah! Well, then, maybe I CAN be nitpicky.

I’m going to talk about something that may seem a little odd regarding being nitpicky, so bear with me.

I can be nitpicky regarding MY feelings and thoughts!

Unfortunately, in the past, it has happened on this blog, too. The way people respond in comments, I select certain pieces I do not agree with. This hinders me from looking at the overall response. Since I struggle with validation, especially in the past, I over-explain or defend my position. It is not needed.

Same with a blog post, which I am hypocritical of because I get frustrated when people take one or two things out of my post they disagree with. If they had focused on the whole post, most of them would see that I actually support what they were saying. Yet, I disagree, as well, with one or two points out of an entire blog post or response.

I already stated I struggle with validation. Which, admittedly, is a nice and lukewarm way of saying, I struggle with the pride of being right and feeling like I am right through others validating that. I don’t like my feelings getting hurt therefore I seek assurance from others and I’m prideful about it.

PrideA feeling or a source of satisfaction.

I think when we pick one or two things we do not agree within a discussion, oftentimes, pride is involved. As a Christian, we could correct someone with prideful intentions as our source for reasoning.

When we are looking at the specks of others, we are not seeing with the eyes of Christ, but self. We are not hoping to help others gain, but instead, we selfishly cherish ourselves gaining from these specks.

Amazing how Christ will teach us through one scripture.

I have a lot to think about.

  1. I never even thought of it that way. I have had some comments that I cannot even respond to right away because I’ll respond with emotions rather than trying to understand where they’re coming from. So I totally get it!!

    1. It can be hard! I’ve been working on stepping away and praying. To not focus so much on what I want to say, but what is someone else saying. The scripture really made me think, and I’m glad this spoke to you, too! 🙂
