“Where Then Do You Get That Living Water?”

I’ve put off continuing the Gospel Journey, mainly because there is a lot of information and trying to figure out the “best” way to somewhat share a chronological story of Christ. Obviously, I’m not going to be perfect. Please bear with me. (I somewhat dread reaching 1 & 2 Chronicles, haha!)

Regardless, it truly is fascinating to try to get a better idea of what His journey was like. Today I started this post with Christ’s rejection, and then retreated to His ministry started in Galilee, and then found more scripture that had to be covered prior to both of these things. So let’s journey with Christ.

Today’s Reading: John 3:22-36 & 4:01-26

John The Baptist Exalts Christ

John 3:22-36

This is before John the Baptist gets arrested. When the disciples and Jesus go into the land of Judea, Christ stays and baptizes. John was also baptizing there. During this time, there was an argument between the Jews and John’s disciples about purification.

John’s disciples were asking about Jesus baptizing others.

John answers them saying that Christ baptizing fulfills his joy and that while Christ must increase he must decrease. John also gives some very powerful words.

“He who has received His testimony has certified that God is true. For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure.” John 3:33

Samaritan Woman & The Well

John 4:01-26

The book of John says once the Pharisees were aware that Jesus and His disciples were baptizing more people than John the Baptist, Jesus left Judea and headed to Galilee. In order to do that, He had to go through Samaria, which is kinda right in the middle between Judea and Galilee.

The city of Samaria, Sychar, is the plot of land that Jacob gave to Joseph. Therefore, it makes sense that Jacob’s well was there. Being tired Jesus rested by the well. He was alone, as the disciples went into the city to get food. A Samaritan woman approaches, and Jesus requests for her to give Him a drink.

Since ties between Jews and Samaritans were bad, the woman wants to know why Jesus asked for a drink. Christ answers if she knew the gift of God, and if she knew Who spoke to her, she would have asked Him and received living water.

Likely intrigued by the response, she looks at Jesus who has nothing to draw with. She looks at the well and how deep it is. “Where then do You get that living water,” she asks. “Are You greater than our father Jacob?”

Maybe Jesus casts a glance to the well as He answers, “Whoever drinks from this well will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”

Not surprisingly, the woman wants the water. Jesus tells her to bring out her husband, and she tells Him she doesn’t have a husband. Which is true, Jesus says. She’s had five husbands, and the one she is with currently is not her husband.

The woman then asks about where to worship. Long ago, people worshipped on the mountain they were on, but now the Jews worship in Jerusalem. She wanted to know where was the right place to worship.

Jesus responds that the time is coming there will be no particular place to worship. The Jews know why they worship, for salvation, whereas the Gentiles do not know why they worship. However, as Christ shares, the time is coming where true worshippers will worship God in spirit and truth, and that’s what God actually desires. “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

The woman says she knows a Messiah is coming and that He will tell them all things.

Jesus responds, “I who speak to you am He.”

What To Take Away: There is always a right time to do things and when to step away. Jesus, as He travels, knows when to leave and when to stay. Something I think we need to be better at. We receive this kind of knowledge and patience through Living Water.

Jesus Christ Himself and His Spirit within us guides us and shows us what we need to do. Worshipping the Lord daily in prayer, scripture reading, and song draws us to Him. When we are spending time with the Father He will guide us. A good parent never turns away their child who needs help. Going to the Lord with outstretched arms makes this all the easier for God and us to bond.
