Longer Life & Better Health

The secret to youth and life found in scripture? I never realized scripture talks about the state of our spiritual walk and how that affects our health.

Today’s Reading | Ch. 3 of Proverbs

Health, Relationship With God

Scripture says keeping the law and commandments can lengthen our days and life, as well as add peace to them.

There is more to the secret of life.  Mercy and truth needs to very close to us, “write them on the tablet of your heart.” This will help us find favor not only with men, but God also.

One of my favorite scriptures is Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He shall make your paths straight.”

But clearly, there is much more truth in this chapter, than just these two verses.

The very next verse warns us not to be wise in our eyes but to fear God. Naturally, if we fear Him, then we need to leave behind wickedness (sin). Avoiding sin also benefits our health.

It’s helpful to understand that God disciplining us is a good thing, as v. 11- 12 says, “Do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor detest His correction; for whom the Lord loves He corrects.”

Wisdom & Relationship With Others

Again, verses 13-18 talk about wisdom and they also say wisdom lengthens life, as well as gives peace. We are told God is wise, and therefore we need to be wise. We need to seek godly wisdom. Sound wisdom from the Lord, discernment, and understanding prevent us from stumbling.

Clearly, we need to bond with the Lord in order to obtain this kind of wisdom and understanding. This bond is touched on in the following verses 24-26. As we can sleep at night knowing God is watching over us. He is our confidence. He helps us not stumble. What a comfort!

The remaining verses relate to our interactions with people.

Whenever we can give and do good for others, we should. If we are able and have the time, money, items, etc, we should not wait until tomorrow. We shouldn’t plan evil against others because we need to be people others can turn to in help.

No envy should be shown to oppressors and our enemies. God desires more. We should not fall victim to the same things they do. God has no place for these kinds of people. His counsel is with the upright, v. 32.

God does not want us acting wicked. His curse is with the wicked. The just are blessed.

“Surely He scorns the scornful, but gives grace to the humble. The wise shall inherit glory, but shame shall be the legacy of fools.” (v.34-35)

Attributes To Long Life, Finding Favor With God, & Wisdom

  • Keeping the law and commandments
  • Know the truth by reflecting it in our heart, life & show mercy to others
  • Trusting in & acknowledging God completely in our life.
  • Fearing God above all else, and being obedient by turning away from what is sinful.
  • God disciplines those He loves
  • It is only through Him we receive wisdom, understanding, and discernment.
  • In every way, get along with others, and help others.
  • Do not envy evil nor partake of it.
  • Stay away from wickedness. God blesses the just.

What To Take Away: It looks like having a spiritual walk is not just for our spiritual health, but it affects every part of us. Being Christlike affects our daily life. Our choices. Our words. Our thoughts. How we interact with others. Naturally, this will affect our physical, mental, and emotional health, too. And, that’s pretty powerful.

Having the right relationship with Jesus only benefits us. It decreases worry. Increases trust. It decreases heartache, anger, and increases mercy and healing. We give Jesus our burdens, and He carries us.

  1. Well proverbs is such a great book and probably my favorite but I am only recently learning to allow God to take over my situations that cause anxiety. I actually just wrote about death recently on my christian blog (which I have recently felt necessary to start). Death has always been a sore subject for me. I always enjoy your blog! 🙂

    1. Death is such a tough subject, a very painful one. Even scriptures we are familiar with, sometimes it can take a while for us to apply what they say. Often times we are challenged in difficult time to apply the scriptures we cling to. Anxiety is certainly no stranger to me, either. I’m so glad my blog is a blessing to you! Praise Jesus 🙂

  2. Truth. God will carry us and we will recieve His peace but we have to surrender and obey. I would greatly appreciate some prayer for our church family, we recently lost a dear friend and brother. He left behind 8 children, please pray for his family as well. Thank you

    1. Amen, surrender absolutely is needed!!! I view surrendering as part of being obedient to God. If we are not surrendering first, then we cannot obey Him. Peace is given to those who obey.

I’ll be lifting up the family and church body!!!

      1. You are so welcome!

I edited my response. I feel surrendering is absolutely part of obeying God’s word. We are told to surrender so if we do not then we cannot peace or these other things He gives us and helps us with. ❤ ❤ ❤
