God Asks What Solomon Desires In A Dream

I did not catch that God asked Solomon what he wanted in a dream before, which if you are familiar with my blog and dreams, you’ll understand my surprise. Anyhow, today we are going to cover the scripture in which Solomon receives the gift of wisdom. A lot of people are familiar that Solomon was wise, but he wasn’t born with this wisdom. It was a gift that God gave Solomon.

Today’s Reading | Chapter 3 of 1 Kings 

Solomon makes a treaty with Egypt and marries the daughter of Pharoh. During this time, Solomon is building his own house and he is building and preparing the temple of the Lord. Therefore, people had to sacrifices at high places.

In Gibeon, Solomon offered 1,000 burnt sacrifices on the altar. Scripture then says in a dream the Lord asked Solomon what he wanted. God says, “Ask! What shall I give you?”

Solomon shares that he knows God has shown his father, David, mercy by allowing his son to be king. But he feels that he is a child (v.7). Since the Lord has chosen Israel there are a lot of people who now are under him, and he doesn’t know what he should do. Therefore Solomon requests that the Lord give his heart an understanding to judge the people rightly. That he can discern good from evil.

God was pleased with this and therefore gave Solomon great understanding and wisdom. In fact, there is no other man like Solomon who has such wisdom as he. Jesus, though man, was not like Solomon, He was much better. God then takes this farther, He blesses Solomon with what Solomon DID NOT ask, that being both riches and honor. God also tells him that should Solomon keep all the statues of the Lord, then God will lengthen his days.

Solomon awakes and then goes to Jerusalem to offer more sacrifices and later has a feast for all of his servants.

Two Mothers One Baby

Two prostitutes approach King Solomon with a story about how one woman accidentally slept on her baby, killing the baby and how the woman who killed her child stole the baby of the other.

Solomon makes the choice for the living baby to be cut into two so that each woman would have a piece of the child. The real mother of the living child yearned with compassion and spoke to the King that he not kill the child but give the son over to the other woman. The woman of the dead son, however, wanted the living son to be killed.

Therefore, Solomon was able to discern who the true mother was. Through this, all of Israel feared him because they saw that the wisdom of the Lord was upon him. (v. 16-28)

What To Take Away: It always will benefit us when we pray for God to help us help others and give Him glory. Now, this doesn’t mean we are going to get what we might desire or want. We need God’s will. God will always be glorified, and however God answers us it will be to our benefit. (Including when God rebukes us.)

Sometimes God answers our prayers in ways we do not expect. Sometimes God may answer a prayer we had in our heart but we never verbalized to Him.

However, we may allow a gift or talent that God gives us to become a stumbling block. We let those things become our idols instead of Jesus, and that is a problem.

It’s important with today’s passage we see how much we need the Holy Spirit to guide us. We need His wisdom and His understanding. We need His discernment. Through Jesus, we can conquer and move forward.
