Stop Twisting Jeremiah 10 Because It’s Not About Christmas Trees | Mike Winger

It wasn’t until I joined the blogging community that I learned how divided people can get over Christmas and other holidays. Not that it’s wrong if someone has a personal conviction to not celebrate Christmas or other holidays, but it’s wrong when we press personal convictions on others, when these convictions are not sinful to every individual.

People who have personal convictions and try to enforce them on others, I noticed, typically have good intentions. They truly believe these convictions are sinful to all, so they want to prevent others committing sin, and that’s understandable. The issue is when personal conviction becomes a sin for everyone, it always involves scripture twisting, and misunderstood context.

Mike makes several points regarding Jeremiah 10, which is often used to show how Christmas trees are pagan. Jeremiah 10 points out the trees need to be cut down by craftsmen. These trees are carved into a particular shape and hammered down with nails. Decorated with REAL silver and gold. So, the end result here is not an actual Christmas tree….but a physical idol for the sole purpose of worshipping.

We do not use skilled craftsmen to cut down our trees. We do not use nails and hammer down the shape of our tree. We (typically) do not decorate our trees with real silver and gold. Our trees do not take the shape of a physical idol covered in silver and gold to be worshipped.

Going through other scriptures discussing idols and understanding what the actual context of scripture is regarding Jeremiah 10, Mike makes a pretty clear case Christmas trees are not being discussed. Mike also answers the question, “Is it wrong to use trees to decorate?”

Mike has a ton of content over on his YouTube Channel. He covers cults. He covers skepticism people have of Christianity. Weekly he has a live chat in which he answers 20 questions. He goes over the Bible, he just finished a two years series on the book of Mark. He has warned about watered down translations like The MessageThe Mirror Bible and he has a series of interviewing scholars on the problems of The Passion Bible.
