“People love Jesus, as long as we don’t define who He is.” -Voddie Baucham
Christmas has become deluded. Voddie points out when we argue that Christ is God Incarnate, people will struggle.
Voddie begins in Galatians Ch. 4, which speaks of the adoption we have in Christ to God.
Jesus is not close to God. Jesus is God. The Son of God is Christ. The fullness of God dwells in Him bodily. Voddie mentions some other passages referring to the Trinity and how Christ is God in the flesh.
Voddie points out – Adam is our federal head and we are guilty in Adam. Christ became flesh, not the same way we became flesh. If Christ is born the same way we are born, then He inherits Adam’s guilt. But He did not bear Adam’s guilt, He was born of a virgin.
Jesus is now the Son of Man and the Son of God.
From way back in Genesis, we are told that a woman will bear the promised seed. There are specific requirements of the Messiah. One being He is born under the Law. Voddie makes excellent points regarding understanding we are born in sin and it’s extremely important that Jesus was sinless, and born under the Law.
We can’t stand before God without righteousness. But the righteousness of Christ can be imputed to us, and our sin can be imputed to Christ (placed on Him) on the cross. He can die on our behalf, impute His righteousness, and take on our sins and inherited sin.
This is why doctrine matters, Voddie says. “Even the best of men won’t be enough.” He later says, “What can you teach me that will help me obey the Law when I hate the Law?”
We cannot be good people. As soon as we think we are good, we get prideful and then we have to start all over again, Voddie reminds us.
This is a beautiful message pointing out the Trinity, the double nature of Christ, the purpose of the Savior, how the wages of sin is death, reconciliation, adoption into the family of God, and how we really need to see the Gospel for what it is… in-depth.
