What is Sin? What are Sins Listed in the Bible? | Bite-Sized

Sin is one of those topics that when talking about the Gospel and God’s love, weirdly enough, people do not want to talk about sin. However, the Gospel is not truly given, if sin is avoided. The Gospel message is good news, which means there is bad news, and sin is the bad news.

(ESV) Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

(ESV) John 3:36, “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”

(ESV) Isaiah 59:02, “but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.”

Adam and Eve fell in sin from partaking of the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. This moment in time separated us from having a relationship with God. Sin separates us from God. Sin is about doing what we want over what God wants.

Sin is a fruit of death and for those who have put their faith in Jesus Christ, we are freed from the bondage of sin through Jesus. In fact, He makes us into a new creation, and we are told to die to the old man, our old way of life. We are to turn away from sin, which we can do in Christ. (Genesis 2:17, Romans 6:06, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Colossians 3:09)

I’ve written before about godly living, and by godly living I do not mean we become perfect and sinless in this life because we cannot while in this corrupted body. But we can be freed from the cage sin puts us in. In Christ, we can seek forgiveness from our sins and repent from our sins, meaning we turn away from sin. As a Christian grows in Christ, a Christian will repent more, seek forgiveness more, and turn away from sin more. We will no longer delight in committing sin but hate it.

It’s really important to understand what the Lord warns us about regarding sin in His word. We need to be convicted on a daily basis because it is so easy to get caught up into sin, especially when it comes to pride. But take heart, there is forgiveness in Christ.

In His sinless perfection on the cross, we can be accredited with His righteousness and He accredited with our debt of sin, paying it off with His life, and conquering death through His resurrection. Only through faith alone is grace given to us, not by our “good works.” (Romans 4:16)

Sadly, there are sins in the Bible the world and false teachers want to glorify. So today, I’ve compiled several texts that give lists of sins to help us identify what the Lord calls sin.

Sin Defined

How is sin defined in scripture?Sin is anything that is unrighteous, not of God, and not honoring to God. If anything is not honoring to God, then if we commit these sins and/or encourage others to participate in these sins, we are not being loving, but hateful to God and others. (Romans 1:32)

Evil can never be glorified. Encouraging others to do things that lead them to death and destruction is not loving. Partaking in wickedness is not what it means to love God. Which is why we must seek redemption in Jesus Christ and be forgiven of our sins. See: Why Did A Loving God Kill His Son? (Does God Hate?)

The Gospel Message: With the Good News means there’s bad news. We all are sinners and condemned. We all deserve the just punishment of God’s wrath. Christianity is unlike any other religion because we cannot earn our way into Heaven. God saw the weakness of man and his utter depravity. Yet, He showed us grace. Jesus, God, One Person of the Trinity, became God in the flesh, the God-Man. He was always perfect and sinless. And His humanity was perfected on the cross, living the full sinless life. He became our atonement sacrifice. Dying in our place, taking on the wrath of God upon Himself. He died on the cross, and He was resurrected because death could not hold Him. Jesus is the answer. We, as guilty sinners, need His blood to pay off our debt of sin. For all who put their faith in Him – meaning eyes are opened to the Gospel, we see ourselves as a sinner, we see the need for Christ, we desire our Savior, and we see the ugliness of our sin. Putting our faith in Jesus, we seek HIs forgiveness and repent from our sins, we turn away from our old way of life. We, through the work of the Holy Spirit, continue to become convicted of sin daily. Our eyes will never be the same again. We see things in a different light, and the truth of Christ affects how we live and serve Him. Christ tells us to count the cost. Salvation is a serious topic, it is not to be taken lightly. 1. Yes, His grace is truly undeserved! We cannot fully understand the Gospel if we do not understand the depravity of sin. Thanks be to the Lord this was a good read for you, that’s wonderful!
