How Do I Know God’s Will For My Life?

God’s will is a major topic many Christians struggle with. I certainly did. The truth is I was lied to for decades. It hurts me when I see friends and family deceived. It hurts me knowing most likely someone reading this is also under the same deception I was.

I pray today changes your mind about the will of God and that His Holy Spirit, Who points to the truth of Christ, opens your eyes.

After reading scripture – no one should believe God does not give us instructions for EVERY single thing in life. If we struggle understanding God’s will, we should understand our struggle relates more to faith and obedience (our issues) than God being direct on what He wants us to do.

What I Won’t Be Telling You….

Notice the absence of me telling you to try to listen in silence and interpret signs in your life? Yeah, that’s the point.

Today’s post will give you actual ways to hear God and to truly know what is of His will and what isn’t. No mysticism needed.

See:

The Christian is first and foremost saved through faith in Christ and grace show by God through the atonement sacrifice of Jesus. After the Christian is saved, he or she is a new creation in Christ.

There are countless instructions throughout the Bible in how we are to live. These instructions also help us understand what is the will of God and what is not.

2 Basic Rules of Understanding God’s Will

1. To begin with, the sinner must first have the wisdom of the Holy One.

When we are told to seek wisdom in scripture, this wisdom must first relate to Jesus Christ and the Gospel message. If we fail to understand the Gospel, then we have a false Gospel and a false Christ. We will not follow the will of God in His word because we do not know where and Who the will of God begins with, which is Christ.

2. Once our eyes are open to sin and what Christ has done – our decisions now stem from asking is this loving God or not. We must read His Word!

We will know the answer through knowing what is godly living and what is sin, which means we need to know what God’s word says. We care about godly living, not to save us, but because we love the Lord. We want to know what does our Creator say. How does God instruct us? The only way to be able to know what God says is through reading His word. The only way to know how to use wisdom is through knowing the One who gives wisdom.

Sometimes choices can be sinful based on personal convictions. Sometimes timing just does not work out. For example, little children need more time than older kids – this affects planning. Are we a spouse, a caretaker, what are our priorities now? All of these things affect decisions and timing.

It wasn’t until I got out of the Seeker-Driven and Emergent Church deception, that I found relief in knowing what God’s will was for me and other Christians.

God’s will isn’t about finding Him outside of scripture, but actually finding Him through Christ and listening to what He is saying in His own word.

What Is God’s Will For Those Who Do Not Believe in Christ

Warning: Let’s be clear here. If you have not put your faith in Jesus Christ, the will of God is that you will be judged for your sins against the Law of God. As a sinner, you cannot pay off your sins. The righteous and holy judgment is for the sinner to be eternally separated from the Lord and damned to Hell, where eternal torment and gnashing of teeth takes place. Hell is the absence of God and when God is absent, anything good is absent, too.

Think about it. We wouldn’t scream justice, if a criminal got off free. We would demand the penalty be paid for the crime. Well, we have our own crimes that need paid.

We all want justice in the streets, but we don’t want true justice when it comes to our own sin. We truly are a wicked people at heart, and God knows it. He knows our heart, what we store up within ourselves, and our darkest thoughts.

We all need a mediator, Someone to pay off our debt of sin. Please see: Why Did A Loving God Kill His Son? (Does God Hate?) Christ is the only One Who fulfills the Law of God and He intercedes on behalf of the sinner.

If you would like to see a list explaining sin, check out: What is Sin? What are Sins Listed in the Bible? | Bite-Sized. I would also encourage you to be aware of all the ways the Christian can expect the faithfulness of God because God keeps His word (see: In What Ways Is God Faithful | What Promises Does The Christian Have?)

Understanding God’s faithfulness will connect to understanding His will for our lives.

Warning: Wolves Will Try To Make A Profit Off Of Your Longing and Confusion, regarding God’s Will

I’m not trying to sell you something here, like false teachers who speak vague slogans that sound good on the surface, but then you never really know what they’re talking about.

These false teachers just want to make a profit off of you because you will continue to buy their books. You hope by buying the books you will feel closer to the Lord and understand His will. These books are never enough because what they sell will never be enough. The messages are too vague. They don’t want you to know the truth. Wolves only want you to be tricked.

Jesus is enough.

Note: I’m not against Christians selling materials, but I’m against wolves selling materials that are lies and encourage continued deception.

Again, Please Do Not Try To Hear God Outside of His Word

God’s will can be easily understood through grace and faith in Christ. Jesus then sends the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, Third Person of the Trinity, to indwell in every believer. He, the Holy Spirit, points back to the teachings and truth of Christ in the scripture. Faith is given by Christ and faith is received only through hearing or reading scripture. (Romans 10:17)

No other experiences, okay? HE transforms us. HE ministers to us. HE opens our eyes. HIS word is needed for our transformation and understanding. HE tells us what to do through scripture.

God alone and God’s word alone gives us faith. God alone and God’s word alone gives us godly knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. Not experiences. See: In What Ways Is God Faithful | What Promises Does The Christian Have?

God’s will is NOT as complicated, as so many make it. The reason people often struggle with figuring out God’s will for their life is because they are looking for God through dreams, symbols, signs, and trying to “listen” for Him outside of His very clear, blunt, living, and breathing word. And/Or they are avoiding their Bible on a daily basis, reading scripture incorrectly, and refusing to trust what God says in His word.

As I mentioned, the Bible gives us all the information we need to know, regarding decisions we can make in our life. We do not have to seek God’s will based on feelings or experiences. Our hearts are deceptive, which means our emotions can deceive us on what we think is of God and what isn’t.

Let God’s word tell you what He wants you to do, not your experiences that can easily be misunderstood by a deceived heart. Ask yourself: What’s the difference between a voice you hear being a thought, a demon, or God?

Since my post is already long, and my study continues to grow, I’ve decided to end this post with giving a main idea of what God covers in scripture.

God’s will in scripture gives guidance on:

  • Our relationship with Christ (wisdom, counsel, prayer, rejoicing, giving thanks, suffering, etc.)
  • Our relationship with people (as parents, spouses, children, the Church body, men, women, leaders, workers, etc.)
  • How we are to live (how to use money, our possessions, the kind of friends we make, the kinds of agreements we make, etc.)
  • How we are to speak
  • How we are to act (with the wicked, with those in sorrow, with fools, etc.)
  • What should we do
  • What should we not do
  • What should we listen to
  • What should we not listen to
  • What is wisdom, where to find it, what to do with wisdom
  • What should we hold to, and what should we not hold to
  • How should we think

And so much more! Many things we are told in scripture can apply to multiple situations.

I will be making a series of posts to break down various ways to know the Lord’s will from scripture alone, in addition to a list breaking down the main topics that will be covered next week.

The Gospel Message: With the Good News means there’s bad news. We all are sinners and condemned. We all deserve the just punishment of God’s wrath. Christianity is unlike any other religion because we cannot earn our way into Heaven. God saw the weakness of man and his utter depravity. Yet, He showed us grace. Jesus, God, One Person of the Trinity, became God in the flesh, the God-Man. He was always perfect and sinless. And His humanity was perfected on the cross, living the full sinless life. He became our atonement sacrifice. Dying in our place, taking on the wrath of God upon Himself. He died on the cross, and He was resurrected because death could not hold Him. Jesus is the answer. We, as guilty sinners, need His blood to pay off our debt of sin. For all who put their faith in Him – meaning eyes are opened to the Gospel, we see ourselves as a sinner, we see the need for Christ, we desire our Savior, and we see the ugliness of our sin. Putting our faith in Jesus, we seek HIs forgiveness and repent from our sins, we turn away from our old way of life. We, through the work of the Holy Spirit, continue to become convicted of sin daily. Our eyes will never be the same again. We see things in a different light, and the truth of Christ affects how we live and serve Him. Christ tells us to count the cost. Salvation is a serious topic, it is not to be taken lightly. For a breakdown of this powerful message, understanding how Christ could be God and Man, why God required sacrifices, and more -please see: Why Did A Loving God Kill His Son? (Does God Hate?)

  1. Thank you for this post. Simple and easy to understand God’s will for each aspect of our lives. I don’t think God expects His will for our lives to be that complicated.

    1. Scripture, God’s very word, makes His will so clear! Christians have more freedom in making choices than I think they realize, as long as they are following God’s instructions from His word. Sadly, we want to treat the Lord as a magic eight ball. Yes or no. Even from wrong decisions, the Lord can use those circumstances for His glory and our refinement. We are sinners, we will make mistakes. But God can use that and He gives us so many guidelines of what to consider before we make a choice. 🙂
