Halloween is in the air. Within the past month, I’ve shared some previous posts and I’ve also touched on some new ones regarding themes we tend to see for Halloween. One of the themes for Halloween often relates to psychics, finding out our future, connecting with the dead, and more.
I thought it fitting for this month to recommend some scriptures regarding divination. But first I want to cover some terms to help you understand better what divination consists of.
- Divination is defined by Webster’s Dictionary as the art or practice of using omens or magic to foretell the future.
- Divine has a few meanings. It can relate to or being God, god-like. It can relate to a priest (and therefore, probably a priestess, too.) It can also mean inferring or predicting with assurance or on the basis of mystic knowledge. (Webster)
- Diviner is someone who practices divination. (Webster)
Divination is something that relates to the spiritual. Often, people are trying to use the spirit realm to gain information, usually about themselves. What many may not realize is this is part of the occult.
A few things to understand. Mystic knowledge sounds like special knowledge (Gnosticism) – and those practicing psychic readings, Ouija boards, tarot cards, and the like are participating in the occult.
- Occult – not easily understood, mysterious, relating to supernatural agencies, their effects or knowledge. (Webster)
Christians can participate in the occult and not know it. When we try to communicate with dead saints, like the Catholics, that’s part of the occult. When we try to communicate with “angels” that’s part of the occult. Remember, demons will appear as angels of light. We are NEVER told in scripture to communicate with anyone in the spiritual realm, except the Lord. Demons can appear as dead loved ones, as spirit guides, as a Christ figure, but not be the real Jesus.

Leviticus 20:06 – “then I will set my face against that man and against his clan and will cut them off from among their people, him and all who follow him in whoring after Molech. If a person turns to mediums and necromancers, whoring after them, I will set my face against that person and will cut him off from among his people.“ – Note: Turning to divination is prostituting ourselves with false gods instead of turning to the true God through Jesus. Divination practices are considered an abomination and are just as bad as sacrificing children to the burning hands of the false god, Molech.

Leviticus 19:26,31 – There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer… “You shall not eat any flesh with the blood in it. You shall not interpret omens or tell fortunes.

Deuteronomy 18:09-12 -“When you come into the land that the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD. And because of these abominations the LORD your God is driving them out before you.

Deuteronomy 18:14 – for these nations, which you are about to dispossess, listen to fortune-tellers and to diviners. But as for you, the LORD your God has not allowed you to do this. Note: We are not to turn to fortune-tellers and those who practice seeking spirits. God destroyed nations who used the occult.

Jeremiah 27:09 – So do not listen to your prophets, your diviners, your dreamers, your fortune-tellers, or your sorcerers, who are saying to you, ‘You shall not serve the king of Babylon.’
Note: Divinations are warned against in the New Testament, as well. God does not change. See: Revelation 9:21, Galatians 5:19-20
I will share a post next week on these terms, and some other terms not listed, like automatic writing, and more.
** Unless stated, all scripture is from ESV.

The Gospel Message: With the Good News means there’s bad news. We all are sinners and condemned. We all deserve the just punishment of God’s wrath. Christianity is unlike any other religion because we cannot earn our way into Heaven. God saw the weakness of man and his utter depravity. Yet, He showed us grace. Jesus, God, One Person of the Trinity, became God in the flesh, the God-Man. He was always perfect and sinless. And His humanity was perfected on the cross, living the full sinless life. He became our atonement sacrifice. Dying in our place, taking on the wrath of God upon Himself. He died on the cross, and He was resurrected because death could not hold Him. Jesus is the answer. We, as guilty sinners, need His blood to pay off our debt of sin. For all who put their faith in Him – meaning eyes are opened to the Gospel, we see ourselves as a sinner, we see the need for Christ, we desire our Savior, and we see the ugliness of our sin. Putting our faith in Jesus, we seek HIs forgiveness and repent from our sins, we turn away from our old way of life. We, through the work of the Holy Spirit, continue to become convicted of sin daily. Our eyes will never be the same again. We see things in a different light, and the truth of Christ affects how we live and serve Him. Christ tells us to count the cost. Salvation is a serious topic, it is not to be taken lightly. Scripture To Meditate On – (ESV) Ezekiel 13:22-23 – Because you have disheartened the righteous falsely, although I have not grieved him, and you have encouraged the wicked, that he should not turn from his evil way to save his life, therefore you shall no more see false visions nor practice divination. I will deliver my people out of your hand. And you shall know that I am the LORD.”
