Growing in the knowledge of God might seem like a complex topic, but it does not have to be.
Can we answer the question, “Why is it important to grow in the knowledge of God?”
Did you know that not only should we pray for wisdom and understanding for ourselves, but also for others?
Early in the book of Colossians, Paul makes the point that the church of Colosse is full of believers. They believe the Gospel of Christ and have shown their faith in Him. It is right after the first few verses in chapter one that we see the verses for today.
Colossians 1:09-12 says:
And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.
Life Application for Colossians 1:09-12
Pray without ceasing.
- This is an important command as we see it repeated through scripture. Part of praying without ceasing includes praying for others.
We are to pray for the body of Christ.
- We are to ask that those following Christ are filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding. (Knowledge of God’s will is found in scripture. God’s Will for You Today | Instructions for Life)
Spiritual wisdom and understanding is connected to be able to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord.
- Spiritual wisdom and understanding allows us to know how to please Him and bear good fruit. Spiritual wisdom and understanding also increases our knowledge of God. (Again, that’s because it’s connected to scripture that’s all about our Lord and Savior.)
The strength given to us is from the Holy Spirit,
- Who we receive after putting our faith in Jesus Christ.
Knowledge of God is connected to endurance and patience with joy, which ties into the strength the Lord gives us. All the more reason to pray and read scripture daily.
We are to give thanks to the Father because of what He has done in Jesus Christ.

The Gospel Message– The Gospel message is good news, which means there’s bad news. We all are sinners and condemned. We all deserve the just punishment of God’s wrath. Christianity is unlike any other religion because we cannot earn our way into Heaven. God saw the weakness of man and his utter depravity. Yet, He showed us grace. Jesus, God, One Person of the Trinity, became God in the flesh, the God-Man. He was always perfect and sinless. And His humanity was perfected on the cross, living the full sinless life. He became our atonement sacrifice. Dying in our place, taking on the wrath of God upon Himself. He died on the cross, and He was resurrected because death could not hold Him. Jesus is the answer. We, as guilty sinners, need His blood to pay off our debt of sin. For all who put their faith in Him – meaning eyes are opened to the Gospel, we see ourselves as a sinner, we see the need for Christ, we desire our Savior, and we see the ugliness of our sin. Putting our faith in Jesus, we seek HIs forgiveness and repent from our sins, we turn away from our old way of life. We, through the work of the Holy Spirit, continue to become convicted of sin daily. Our eyes will never be the same again. We see things in a different light, and the truth of Christ affects how we live and serve Him. Christ tells us to count the cost. Salvation is a serious topic, it is not to be taken lightly.
