Stop Fooling Ourselves

In the world we live in, it is SO easy to be caught up in everything we “think” we know. People can puff us up in the vain lie of how much we have studied, or how much we have taken time to discuss life, scripture, theology, God, what have you.

We need to make sure we are not caught up in the lie that what we know is always true. Just because the group around us believes things to be true does not mean it may be true. God has a way of opening our eyes, and whether or not we actually listen to Him is entirely different.

(NIV) 1 Corinthians 3:18, “Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become “fools” so that you may become wise.”

Just something to think about.

Growing up as a teen, adults did not provide me with the answers I wanted. I thought I was spiritually mature. Decades later, I saw the importance of understanding and being able to identify deception, false teachers/prophets. I realized my own ignorance about the Bible and the need to study all portions. I came out of the false doctrine of the Seeker-Driven movement, as well as the Holiness doctrine, suffering under the legalism of sinless perfection. My goal is to help women grow in the word of God. To trust His word. To tear apart deceptions, and to encourage Christian Apologetics. My second blog is Peeking Beneath, little more personal, which occasionally is updated. Aside from blogging, I am a wife. I occasionally work on a Christian Fantasy series. I enjoy painting, gardening, cooking, reading, crocheting, and learning from godly men and women.

  2. I was praying this afternoon for blinded eyes to be opened, but I was praying specifically that God would do something that would turn hearts to him or back to him.

    All of a sudden he gave me a vision of eyeglasses, but only the left lens. The feeling was that God was going to do something with this left lens that would bring people to their knees.

    So, as soon as I saw your picture of the eyeglasses at the beginning of this writing I had a sense this was related. And this spoke to my heart for it is part of what I was praying:

    “God has a way of opening our eyes, and whether or not we actually listen to Him is entirely different.”

    I believe that is what He was saying to me, that he has a way of opening our eyes, but we still have to listen and obey.

    I have not had a chance yet to completely pray through this vision, but my first thought is that left is the opposite of right like wrong is the opposite of right, and so it is the wrong (ungodly) vision that must be corrected because it is faulty vision. It is what is in need of a corrective lens, and it appears to me that this will come about through some type of divine correction.

    1. Praise the Lord for allowing this post to speak to you in such a mighty way. It is really true. We constantly see in scripture people with ears but do not hear and eyes but do not see. We HAVE the opportunities, and the options to know the truth, but still, we turned a blind eye. May God continue to speak to you through this vision, thank you so much, Sue, for sharing 🙂

      1. Well, the interesting thing about what you wrote in connection with the picture of glasses you displayed is that glasses are corrective lenses to improve our vision. When God opens our blinded eyes, he corrects our vision, but sometimes he corrects us, who are his, via divine discipline, in order to open our eyes to truths we are missing, especially if we are being stubborn and unwilling to follow in his truth.

        The glasses, thus, represent something external which is being used to correct faulty vision, i.e. faulty perception, discernment, etc. I know there have been many times in my own life where God has allowed me to go through such and such in order to help me to discern my own errors so that I will listen to him and do what he says. Oh, if we would just listen and obey…

      2. Completely agree! Conviction in stumbling is a powerful tool. Using His gifts He’s given us to awaken/guide us to the truth also says so much about His love for us. What a powerful connection we can have with Him if only we walk in His ways. 🙂

  3. Amen, T.R.! It’s easy to be blinded to the whole truth if there’s something there we don’t want to face or to be blinded by our own pride because someone’s stroked our ego…we’ve got to dig for the whole truth, and nothing but the truth and keep our spiritual eyes open to ways we can deceive even ourselves.

      I have a post coming out on Thursday, and I've been working two days on it, but I am asking prayer for God's hand and for people to see the direction I'm taking with it. If you could add that prayer in for the next few days, I would greatly appreciate it. 🙂

  5. I have to be very cautious about staying true to my thoughts and beliefs, while at the same time being open to new ideas and opinions. While I love learning new things about the Bible, I always make sure that others’ thoughts are sound and biblically based. It’s definitely something to think about!

    (Also, I love your new sign-off!)

That’s very wise, and definitely smart to keep yourself accountable that way. 🙂 I’ve found people struggle when they want to focus on a select number of scriptures, but then if another scripture argues/goes against that idea…it is hard for that person to discuss. They want their thoughts to be justified by this “sound” idea, and they want to argue “but these scriptures say…” It never ends well.

      But I’ve found God’s truth is always supported by every single scripture. It is fluid. Even if those same scriptures say something opposiing the point is we know true context and look at multiple scriptures that tell the whole story, cause it is very easy to find opposing scriptures if we do not dig deeper and connect them.

      1. It can be challenging! I’ve never found myself in the middle of a Bible verse-comparing discussion (thankfully), just talking about different verses with my family. Opposing views and opinions can wreak havoc!

      2. My main experience has been with the blogging community, and that’s okay, but it certainly has,well at first, stumbled me, but I know have a better grasp on how to handle those situations. In fact, it has encouraged me, after thinking and praying for several months on it, to cover things that I felt I had to be silenced by because people did not agree with me and felt I was offending them.

  6. My dad used to always tell us that what we grew up knowing, our environment and what we have been exposed to, form our truth. Reason why certain things I think are totally wrong could be acceptable in a different place (I am not referring to spiritual principles and truth). But yeah I agree with you. Knowing this does humble a lot
