One of the most well known parts of the Bible we will go over today. The Lord’s Prayer. The most amazing Bible teaching Teacher tells us in the manner in which we need to pray and how to pray. But He also shows us how precious private time with God is.
Today’s Reading: Matthew Ch. 6:01-15, Luke 11:01-04
In Secret God Knows
Matthew 6:01-04 says that charitable deeds need to go unseen, otherwise we do not have our reward from God. This is explained in the next verse as hypocrites receive their reward from men. They make it well known what they are doing so others can praise them for their deeds. Instead, what we are told to do by Christ is to not be seen by others, our reward comes from God who sees.
Manner In Which We Pray – Matthew 6:05-09 Following the previous verses we are told to likewise do prayer in secret. Not to be seen by men like the hypocrites who love to be seen in the temple and street corners praying. We are to go into our room, shut the door, and pray to our Father who is in the secret place. For what God sees in secret, like prayer, He rewards openly.
We are also not to have vain (empty, hollow, prideful) repetitions in our prayer. Note: This doesn’t say meditations on scripture, so saying a scripture repeatedly doesn’t have to be vain, unless we do it for vain reasons. The heathens (skeptics, pagans, idolators) think many words get their prayers answered. (v.8) Before we even ask, God knows what we need. Jesus then leads us into how we should pray.
Luke 11:01 In the book of Luke, it says Jesus was praying, and when He stopped a disciple requested that He teach them to pray just as John the Baptist taught his disciples.
Matthew 6:09-13 & Luke 11:02-04 The Lord’s Prayer is given as follows:
- Our Father in Heaven
- Hallowed be Thy name
- Thy kingdom come
- Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven
- Give us this day our daily bread
- And forgive us our sins (debts) as we forgive those indebted to us.
- And do not lead us into temptation but deliver us from the evil one. (Luke ends here)
- Matthew 6:13 – For Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and glory forever. Amen.
What To Take Away: I have talked about the Lord’s Prayer a couple years ago on my blog and both posts are here:
- Post | Prayer, What To Pray For (2017)
- Post | Hidden Messages Of The Lord’s Prayer (2017)
What is fascinating is that the Lord’s prayer truly covers everything we need to pray for: God’s will, God’s way, God’s Kingdom, our needs, for forgiveness, for others, for protection, and above all giving praise to God.
Give Him time throughout the day, and do things in secret not to be seen by others, but by God. It’s simple, but some of the hardest things to do. Prayer and humility go hand in hand.

He has taught me the importance of having faith in the unknown, which is still an everyday struggle, and the need for gratitude. Blessings!

It’s awesome that faith is not blind. It is built upon a Rock, even when we can’t see. Yes! Gratitude is important!
