The Doctrine of Total Depravity (Voddie Baucham)

(Updated: January 12th, 2022)

Total depravity is debated in the church. Whether you believe it or not, I think the points Voddie makes about sin, no one could argue with. This sermon is a great breakdown on why sin is so corrupted.

Voddie focuses on Romans Ch. 3

If we don’t get the doctrine of depravity (how we are not inherently good), Voddie makes these points.
– it changes how we discipline kids
– it determines the establishment of government
– it changes the way you view guilt and punishment
– it affects the way we treat mental illness
– it affects how we share the Gospel
– it affects how we hear and see the Gospel

Without understanding the bad news, we do not understand the good news.” – Voddie Baucham

No one is righteous. No one does good. There is no fear of God.- Romans 3:10

Being deprived means we instinctively turn to evil instead of God.

No one is as bad as they could be, but everyone is condemned and no one is righteous.” – Voddie Baucham

There are those who believe in partial depravity, and Voddie makes some nice counters. If no one understands God, how can someone reason to God? Everything that comes out of the mouth, scripture says, is corrupted.

Fallen man has fallen desires… and everyone else is an obstacle to his satisfaction.” – Voddie Baucham

You can cage evil, but you or I can’t eradicate it.” – Voddie Baucham

Until we see just how deprived we are, we will not understand the power of the cross, the atonement sacrifice of Christ’s life and taking the wrath of God in our stead, for all who put their faith in Him.

Voddie reminds the Christian that we are declared righteous because of Christ, for those who put their faith in Him, but our body, our mind, does not forget the sin we used to be a part of. This is why we need to cling to Christ and the truth of the Gospel. We must be renewed by the Holy Spirit daily, each moment, and we cannot love the world.

Voddie ends with asking, why aren’t we desperate for the souls of those around us?

Scripture To Memorize/Meditate On – (ESV) John 16:07-08, “Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.

Luke 11_39-40, _...so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy–full of greed and wickedness. Fools! Didn’t God make the inside as well as the outside_
